Overview:
Although the Battle Cobra-CS was ComStar's first foray into OmniMech design, it was the
second project undertaken by the Blessed Order in reverse engineering Clan equipment to
Inner Sphere standards. The Clan Timber Wolf, known to the Inner Sphere forces as the
fearsome Mad Cat, was the first Clan war machine observed by ComStar in 3049. Recognizing
the fearsome capabilities of the 'Mech versus any desgin in the Successor States, Primus
Myndo Waterly ordered ComStar engineers to reverse engineer the Mad Cat by utilizing
Catapult chassis in the Com Guards. Precentor Martial Focht objected on the grounds of the
observed Mad Cat's performance characteristics were beyond even the advanced Star League
technology ComStar possessed, and while ComStar certainly had some very talented engineers
its military design arm was completely untested to this point and may have actually been as
limited as late Succession Wars House designers. His concerns were set aside and several
prototypes were constructed. The first major hurdle was combining the speed and heat
dissipation capabilities of the Mad Cat as the ancient Catapults in the Com Guard arsenal
were not able to be upgraded with double heat sink technology. Other attempts to integrate
XL engines and to replace the conventional chassis with Endo Steel composites also met with
failure, much to the chagrin of the Primus.
However, it wasn't until the lead up to and the aftermath of the Battle of Tukayyid that any
major headway was made in duplicating Clan OmniMechs. Substantial analysis was able to be
performed on dozens of relatively intact Clan 'Mechs salvaged from Tukayyid, providing a
major leap in understanding engineering hurdles that would need to be overcome to better
replicate OmniMech technology. Additionally, Com Guard engineers had undertaken many
upgrade programs to classic Star League era machines, integrating advanced XL engines,
structural components, and weaponry in rapid order for the battle. With the final hurdle of
Omnipod technology overcome with the Battle Cobra-CS, ComStar introduced a fearsome new
heavy OmniMech to face any foes, be they Inner Sphere or Clan, in the Mad Cat-CS.
Capabilities:
Though it would benefit from the most sophisticated technology available to the Blessed
Order, the Mad Cat-CS would not be able to match its Clan cousin in every regard. Precentor
Martial Focht directed that the greatest efforts would be made to retain a flexible and
maneuverable heavy OmniMech, with as much firepower and heat dissipation as possible. Most
of the Mad Cat-CS's configurations ape the Timber Wolf's, though often much less effective
in certain ranges due to limitation of Inner Sphere weaponry.
With a massive 375XL engine at its core, the Mad Cat-CS matches the Timber Wolf in speed and
maneuverability. Endo Steel chassis provides more raw tonnage, and the Mad Cat-CS utilizes
the latest in ferro-fibrous armor compound to nearly match the durability of its Clan
cousin. However, the increased bulk of most of these components, and the double heat sinks
the design use can easily run into constraints in the relatively cramped torso bays. The
arms retain the most flexibility of pod space, but are still somewhat more limited than the
Clan original.
Deployment:
The Mad Cat-CS has been deployed in its most sizeable numbers in the 5th and 6th Com Guard
Armies. The Mad Cat-CS is often slated for use by former Flashman or Lancelot pilots that
were Dispossessed by Tukayyid as the Guards, or Level II and III commanders in
mobility-focused commands. Many divisions have begun to deploy Mad Cat-CS primarily in
Level IIs that include the new Grim Reaper, Battle Cobra-CS, and Raijin 'Mech designs as the
Com Guards rebuilds its shattered divisions.
