Overview:
In 3092, Nashan Diversified released a new medium BattleMech for
sale on the general market, and while few had suspected the
computer conglomerate was even interested in heavy manufacture,
the ?Mech was too powerful and too timely to ignore. By 3110, the
Hel had sold to a handful of mercenary units and two of the
provincial governments in the former Free Worlds League. At that
point, Defiance stopped supplying components to what had become
a competitor, forcing Nashan to cease production of the promising
BattleMech.
Capabilities:
The Hel filled the same strategic and tactical roles of the
venerable Wolverine and Enfield ?Mechs. With excellent speed for a
50-ton ?Mech, it was built to move as part of a lance and fulfill
ambush and interdiction roles. The right-arm-mounted heavy PPC
offered incredible mid-range firepower, and its Streak SRM 6 and
paired extended-range medium lasers made it useful for combinedarms
roles as well.
Deployment:
The Hel?s first engagement was during a Wolf?s Dragoons raid into
the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey in 3094. The Dragoons? Black Cats
battalion struck Kosciusko, intending to destroy a regional training
center. The Duchy?s aerospace defenses were stronger than the
Dragoons expected, and one of the Cats? Union-C-class DropShips
was forced to land 100 kilometers away from the rest of the
Dragoons. While the embarked Trinary?s Elementals raided a nearby
spaceport for repair parts, the ?Mechs?including three Hels?
deployed to block a Duchy military force moving to capture the
DropShip.
The Duchy column, two companies of armor and infantry led by a
lance of BattleMechs, wasted little time disguising their course. The
Dragoons Hels hid behind a series of boulders in an arroyo and
waited, while a second Star of ?Mechs demonstrated another half
kilometer away. The Duchy forces, seeing the faraway Star, rushed
ahead. The three Hels?and their heavy PPCs?rose from
concealment and destroyed two ?Mechs with concentrated fire from
the rear. By the time the Duchy armor reacted, the Hels had used
their jump jets to escape over the lip of the arroyo. Confused and
disoriented, the Duchy forces allowed the Dragoons enough time to
repair their DropShip and escape.
More recently, Hels fought in the Clan Wolf invasion along the
Lyran Commonwealth border. During the attack on Colfax, the
mercenary company Cox?s Cattle Prods ended up as the sole ?Mechequipped
garrison on the planet. The Wolf attackers, a Nova of Wolf
Guards, offered the mercenaries the honor of a batchall, but the
mercenaries didn?t cooperate in good faith. Instead, they took their
eight BattleMechs?four of them Hels?into the hills to wage a
guerrilla campaign.
Unlike the rest of the Cattle Prods? equipment, the Hels were able
to operate for several months without significant resupply. Their
standard armor was easily acquired, as were reloads for their shortrange-
missile launchers. In the end the four Hels were the last Cattle
Prod assets to be run to ground by the Wolves, who resorted to
using requisitioned civilian skimmers and unarmored Elementals as
scouts. In the final battle, the Hels were able to destroy a Wolf Blood
Reaper before being destroyed as bandits.
Variants:
The only factory variant of the Hel swapped the heavy PPC for
two large lasers. In a nod to easy retrofit, Nashan offered the entire
finished arm assembly for sale as a spare-parts package.
Notable MechWarriors:
Captain Jonah Fedderer: Captain Fedderer commanded
Charlie Company of the Black Cats Battalion of Wolf?s Dragoons
near the turn of the century. It was his company that fought the
action on Kosciusko, and his Hel led the ambush of the Duchy
forces. Though he was a constant discipline problem, Fedderer was
a superb shot with his Hel?s heavy PPC, claiming sixteen solo ?Mech
kills before being killed in a duel with the Jade Falcons in 3103.
Leftenant Catherine O?Doyle: O?Doyle?s Hel, which she calls
Mistress, is painted entirely black from head to foot, except for a
burnished-silver crown of spikes painted around the cockpit. A
warrior in House Davion?s Syrtis Fusiliers, she had built a fearsome
reputation along the Capellan border, routinely challenging Capellan
MechWarriors to Solaris VII-style duels, which she won. With the
Capellan drive toward New Syrtis in 3144, O?Doyle and the rest of
the Fusiliers scrambled to get in front of the advancing Capellan
armies, greatly diminishing her reputation.
