Overview:
The Toro has been a symbol of Taurian pride for centuries, and
when production of the Succession Wars-era TR-A-6 resumed in the
decades after the end of the Jihad, there was eager discussion in
both halves of the sundered Taurian nation about producing an
upgraded variant. While the Concordat?s still-recovering
manufacturers were in no position to take on another new project,
the Calderon Protectorate (having already gone from jury-rigging
armed IndustrialMechs to full BattleMech production in barely two
decades) was able and willing to leverage its newfound recognition
among Inner Sphere and Clan powers.
To upgrade its existing Toro production line, Protectorate Arms
Conglomerate sourced construction aid from the Federated Suns
and purchased components from allied Periphery realms. Under the
Republic?s arms restrictions, PAC was unable to acquire affordable
XL engines, but consultants did assist PAC?s engineers in designing
a brand-new standard chassis. The updated frame was functionally
identical to the Toro?s, but incorporated modern connections,
cavities, and fixtures that eased assembly and allowed for future
structural upgrades. Though production of the new variant remained
low throughout the first decades of the thirty-second century, PAC?s
project was a point of pride
Capabilities:
By Inner Sphere standards, the TR-B-9 Toro (known semiformally
as the Toro Bravo) is little more than an extensive factory
refit, but for the tiny Calderon Protectorate, it marks a major
achievement in design and production. Although the Toro?s
infamously cramped pilot compartment remains, it is now
constructed with improved materials that free up space and weight
for an enhanced electronics suite. The revised armament costs the
Toro Bravo a bit of long-range firepower compared to its
predecessor, but more than makes up for it in versatility, heat
management, and close-range punch. Defensively, ferro-fibrous
armor and CASE (purchased from the Federated Suns under close
Republic scrutiny) help keep the ?Mech battleworthy, despite its
relatively slow speed.
Deployment:
BATTLE HISTORY
The Calderon Protectorate Military has, unsurprisingly,
been the main purchaser of the Toro Bravo. Several other Periphery
nations have expressed interest, but PAC has been unable to supply
more than a handful of export units due to the slow rate of
production.
Shortly after the Second Taurian Pride received its small
allotment of Toro Bravos in 3111, relations between the Concordat
and Protectorate hit a new low point. As border skirmishes erupted,
two lances from the First MacLeod?s Regiment were dispatched to
Mirfak to raid the desert mines. However, when the raiders touched
down and sortied, one of the Taurian Pride?s scrambled response
teams intercepted them. Facing only a reinforced lance (including
three Toro Bravos), the First MacLeod?s ?Mechs charged in,
expecting their brawlers to carve up the Toros inside their minimum
range. They quickly realized their error when they encountered
unexpected ECM and massed SRM salvos. When the Concordat
commander saw one of the new Toros suffer an ammunition
explosion only to rise again and continue firing PPC and laser shots
at her rapidly dwindling forces, she elected to cut her losses and
withdraw.
Following other Concordat encounters with the new Toro, then-
Protector Urratia missed few opportunities to derisively mention it
any time the Protectorate came up in conversation, relentlessly using
the ?Traitors? Toro? as a propaganda wedge for the next decade.
Variants:
During the 3144 negotiations between Protectors Kaff Doru and
Sam Calderon, delegations from the estranged nations met to
explore renewed economic opportunities, with the Toro Bravo being
a notable topic of enthusiastic discussion. The TR-B-12, jointly
proposed by PAC and Vandenberg Mechanized Industries in 3146,
completes the TR-B-9?s chassis redesign by replacing key portions
with endo steel from Protectorate Military Industries? new Belle Isle
facility. Touted as a symbol of reunification, the expensive refit is
specifically designed to use high-end components from the
Concordat, and the new XL engine is supplied by both VMI?s Valkyrie
refit line and PMI.
Notable MechWarriors:
Sister Dolores Anahera, B.R.: Achieving full knighthood in the
Brotherhood of Randis at the age of fifty-five, Sister Dolores had left
the bustle of Davion space (and a commission in the Armed Forces
of the Federated Suns) to follow a new calling in faith and ministry.
During the long 3129 campaign against the Tortuga Dominions, she
and her squire-techs found their newly assigned Toro Bravo, Tentpin,
to be sturdy, useful in various roles, and easy to resupply. When she
returned to Randis IV, she continued to pilot Tentpin on her travels
around the Fiefdom of Randis. Standing atop the ?Mech to preach to
crowds of colonists, ?Sister Dolly? was a welcome and anticipated
annual guest across the region until her reported death in 3148.
