Overview:
The design of a genius independent mercenary 'Mech engineer, Luke Chung, who also designed
the BobCat. It saw limited production for mercenary units operating in and around the Free
Worlds League. It is currently in process of testing and review for integration into the
FWLM with a good chance of success. Even though the Zephyr is very expensive on a per-ton
basis, it is seen that the amount of mobility and firepower packed in this design makes it
among the best valued designs for XL-Engined battlemechs. Several commanders are eager for
this to be approved, especially from Marik Militia divisions stationed near the Capellan
border to return in kind the raids in the duchy of Oriente.
Capabilities:
Essentially an up-gunned spider, but 5 tons heavier. Same movement and jump capability, but
loaded with weight-saving technologies to accommodate triple the firepower, and much more
armor. The MASC system allows the Zephyr to temporarily run with the fastest locusts (and
outrun the rest), and the jump jets allow the Zephyr to grossly out-maneuver them in rougher
terrain as well. Locusts, Spiders, and Tarantulas are no match for the Zephyr. It is an
excellent recon mech, ambusher, raider, and harasser. It is especially adept at hit-and-run
attacks. The XL Engine and XL Gyro make it very unsuitable for main-line warfare however,
despite having the maximum armor allowed for a biped light mech. Heat management is easy:
Fire four mediums and the small if jumping, all weapons if not. If the Mechwarrior decides
to fire all six mediums (or all weapons) while jumping, not firing the small laser will
allow the 'Mech to cool down its 4 accumulated heat in two or three turns.
Deployment:
Zephyrs are currently deployed in limited numbers to various mercenary recon and raiding
missions in the service of the Free Worlds League, mostly into the Capellan Confederation
and bordering peripherary states. The FWLM has purchased two units for evaluation. Pending
testing and approval, the FWLM will likely mass produce and deploy the Zephyr within two to
three years (3067-3068).
