I was mulling this over last night.
It's 3050 or so.
The party has been hired by a Lyran planet on the border with the Periphery. Bandits have been raiding in the area, and with the planet on the frontier no one really wants to bother sending them reinforcements.
The party, if it goes to plan, will help stagger the bandits that hit the planet.
...And then the Falcons come.
The bandits won't be able to leave, and so they'll end up helping the militia and the party evacuate the planet. Thus, the party and a bunch of others wind up on a nearby planet.
This planet also has a mercenary presence, a band under the command of the individual known as "The Revenant" because he seems so supernatural. Thanks to the information provided, The Revenant has a plan. His defensive strategy seems to be absolutely bizarre, but it's the exact counter to what the Falcons do when they invade. If the party does their part, it'll end with The Revenant killing the Falcon commander in a one-on-one duel.
It turns out that The Revenant and most of his people are part of a very secretive group, a group that longs for the return of the Terran Hegemony. The planet they're on was supposed to have a Star League facility, and his people have been looking for it in their spare time.
With the Falcons defeated, The Revenant is a hero, more so than the planet's main military commander and certain other political types. Between this and Operation Scorpion, The Revenant will be faced with several challenges to his leadership and multiple attempts on his life.
The Revenant *will* win in the end, as he seems to be one step ahead of everyone. If the party assists him, they'll be quite wealthy in the end and able to take part in the planet's new status as a second Galatea or second Outreach, giving them the resources and possibly new recruits (from mercenaries and others) to retake the first planet. If they oppose him, however, they risk being crushed or forced off-world. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Revived because I have another idea.
For about 20 years now, I've been nursing an OC faction that will, in time, bring about the New Terran Hegemony. As part of it, ahead of the Jihad the WoB will hire desperate mercenary units to pretend to be bandits and cause problems on the planet Caph so that the WoB can come in as "peacekeepers" and secure the planet to give them a buffer around Terra. This will fail because of the OC faction (and the efforts of a previous gaming group), exposing the situation and allowing Outreach to start blocking the WoB from hiring mercenaries through legit means.
This campaign will have the party on Caph in the wake of this failed attempt.
The faction is so short-handed that they rely heavily on "training cadres" where a service member's senior instructor is also their CO and they basically learn on the job; it's a bare minimum of classroom and field training, then you're put on patrol or sentry duty with everyone else and made to figure it out as you go.
The party will be assigned to one such newly-formed training cadre. There's Captain Holbrooke, the commanding officer who pilots a faction-standard Guillotine (the 9X I came up with a few years ago). There's 1st Sergeant Munson, who pilots a faction-standard Assassin (endo and XL to boost the firepower and armor while adding ECM). Other than a Shadow Hawk from the 1st Succession War that is to be used as a trainer, these two individuals and the party will have the only mechs in the unit; otherwise it's infantry, conventional vehicles, and support.
Given the present situation, the party is tasked with helping to sweep for stragglers ahead of securing an "abandoned" town that the cadre can make into its official headquarters instead of bumming space off of another unit. But in the process of doing so, the party will discover that a surviving high-level WoB officer trapped on the planet is marshalling their forces for one last "I'm taking you with me!" effort. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Mission 1 -
1SG Munson: "All right. We've got reports from a couple of LRRP units that some fool in a Fire Ant is running around doing everything in their power to draw attention. It's pretty obvious that we're looking at a trap, but we need to know who is trying to set this trap and why. And frankly, the only way to do it is for you to spring it. You'll be following me on a nav point sweep to see if we can catch up to this nimrod, and when we do I want you to spring it and run back to whatever point I designate for you. It'll be me and the Cobras taking care of matters from there. Don't worry; you'll get credit for your part."
4 Scorpion light tanks and a Vedette await on a rise overlooking where the party will finally find the Fire Ant. They will get a surprise round atop the party, but will waste it on maneuvering into position and demanding that the party surrender. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Mission 2 -
1SG Munson: "The good news is that we're pretty sure we can piece at least two of those Scorpion tanks back together, and we've already got crews lined up to occupy them; they actually managed to salvage enough of the Fire Ant to get that going as well. The bad news is that we don't have berth space for everyone if that happens. So we need to find a new place pronto.
High command is wanting us to investigate Ringtown, a small cow town on the banks of the Ringson River. If it's clear and relatively intact, we can use it as a staging area while we decide if we want to lay claim to the place or find somewhere better. I'm going to run south of Ringtown near this other bridge to see if I can draw some attention. You'll be escorting a cargo truck of infantry and checking the town out. We'd like to take the place intact if possible, so keep collateral down to a minimum."
The town is occupied by the remnants of an infantry-based mercenary unit, consisting of two platoons of mixed infantry, four wheeled APCs, a Hetzer, and a dozen pickup trucks, four of which are technicals. The unit is so exhausted that they didn't bother to conceal their vehicles, meaning that if the party is paying attention they'll see everything parked out in the open.
If the party gives the infantry and the vehicle crews the opportunity to surrender, then it will be between the party's spokesperson and the unit's leader in a contest of willpower saves to see if the mercenaries surrender. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat."
