mordel.net/tro.php?a=vt&ut=bm&id=672&fltr=qf.000.Designer~Contains~Catalyst%20Game%20Labs~qf.000.Name%2FModel~Contains~War%20Dog

For some reason, I found myself pondering the War Dog this morning.

The TRO:3055 version has two one-shot Streak 2 launchers in the legs, and under the rules of the time an extra half ton had to be given to each launcher to represent the single shot. I always found this bizarre, and wondered why it had to be this way. For example, by making them *normal* Streak 2 launchers, we could have a proper ton of ammo in the right torso and have something that could be used for the duration of the battle.

As it is, even if the missiles hit, that's only a possible maximum of 4 HP damage.

In contrast, an RL 10 can do a possible maximum of 10, with an average of 5.

Hypothetically speaking, I could rip out the Streak 2 OS launchers, drop in six RL 10 launchers (3 RT, 1 LT, 1 RL, 1 LL) and use the leftover ton to either max out the armor or upgrade the small pulse laser to a medium pulse laser. That's 60 rockets going downrange instead of 4 SRMs.

I'm wondering now if, to put it bluntly, the existence of RL 10s and such have essentially rendered the OS launchers obsolete.

OS launchers were obsolete the second they came into existence, and their only existence is for "fluff" reasons. They'd be marginally better if the one shot was built into the weight of the weapon, but 1/2 ton? No thank you!!

In a game that has a lot of stupid weapons, this one might take the cake. There's literally no in-game reason for them to exist.

Thats exactly what we thought when they came up.
The same moment i saw them in TRO 2750 i suggested a house rule and everybody agreed. Since then we used them occasionally.

the only OS Launchers even worth exploring other than RLs are the iOS launchers.

Yeah, I-OS launchers are better because of the weight reduction.

"Better" is a relative term. The idea of OS launchers is a terrible one. It makes no sense in any game mechanic.

Plus, rocket launchers mean that even lighter mechs and vehicles can deliver a devastating spray of firepower for the tonnage.

You can have 30 - 40 rockets going downrange as opposed to a pair of SRMs.

You take two RL-20s and I'll take two SRM-2s and a ton of ammo...over the course of 10 battles you won't win more than three times, and you'll need a lot of luck to do it.

Streak 2 OS: 2 tons

4 RL 10: 2 tons

That's what I was referring to.

2 SRMs vs 40 rockets.

He is in the sense of a comparison between Streat 2 OSs and RL 10s. Obviously not RL10s vs regular SRM 2s.

Every one-shot weapon in the game is dumb.

RLs on a some fast hovers, come in splash some damage zip home for a reload, rise, repeat.

I don't think OS weapons really have a place on a Mech. Take more armor, or a flamer or small laser.
