Overview:
The Thunderbolt II (TDRII-1S) would be the brainchild of Hasan Aydin, a senior engineer
whose family had a long history of employment at Earthwerks. By the 3140's Earthwerks would
begin investigating the possibility of reviving the Thunderbolt line on Calloway VI after
having lost the ability to produce Thunderbolts on Keystone in the wake of that planet's
conquest by the Wolf Empire. During a conference on the subject, attended by several senior
personnel, Hasan would boldly argue against bringing the Thunderbolt series back into
production, pointing out to the board that by bringing back the Thunderbolt they simply
would be creating competition for the highly popular and successful Anzu. Instead, he would
propose a new mech, incorporating the lessons and best features of the Thunderbolt line. The
board, after careful consideration, would greenlight Hasan's proposal appointing him as its
project's lead. Hasan's team would design a mech intent on incorporating some of the best
technology the Innersphere had to offer, blended with some of the most prolific Clan-Tech
they could acquire to produce a machine that would be tough, reliable, and (most
importantly) easy to afford. The intended target audience being the smaller less affluent
states and individual planets of the FWL as well as mercenary outfits, directly pitting the
product against competition like Kali-Yama's Orion and Irian BattleMech?s Stalker.
The result would be a mech that would build upon the T-bolt (to some analyst in a quite
literal sense) by upgrading the frame to support an additional 15 tons of weight. Care would
be taken to ensure the mech would be as easy to maintain as possible and retain its
progenitor's legendary reputation of ruggedness. For its weapons package it would be
equipped with a Clan-Spec. LRM 20 supported by an Artemis IV targeting system. This would be
paired with an IS ER-PPC supplemented with a PPC capacitor. For short range the TDRII-1S
would sport no less than three medium-VSP-lasers. Finally rounding out its weaponry, an IS
er-small laser would be mounted in the head. For protection the TDRII would be clad in a
respectable 14tons of standard armor and feature an anti-missile system. With a Light-Fusion
engine the Thunderbolt would be able to keep up with strategic front-line units, while 15
heatsink would keep it cool.

I really decent upgrade to the TBolt. The EC and LFE grant weight savings while not utterly destroying the durability. CASE II enhances likelihood of survival as well. The weapons package is classic update style. A good solid Juggernaut Zombie.
HOWEVER...
I personally really dislike VSP. Nothing wrong with them, but I'd rather use pulse, x-pulse, or re-engineered over VSP. 12 tons for 27 damage and a possible -3 to-hit at short-range is a lot of weight. Given the weapons load I would rather drop the VSP and ERSL for 3 XMPL, TC, and an Angle ECM. -3 to-hit across 9 hexes, only 18 damage but across all ranges, and an added -1 to-hit to the PPC.
As for the LRM, i'm still getting used to mixed tech being standard. lol. Why use a Clan LRM/20 and IS ERPPC w/ Cap instead of a IS LRM/15 and CL ERPPC? _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

I'm actually surprised to hear you don't like vsp's I'm a big fan of them. (admittedly I'm less warm on the Large VSP's). However that is an excellent alternative pitch, that I didn't consider. I am worried about how high that might spike the BV though , One of the key things I was looking for in the design was to maintain a reasonable BV.
As for the use of a Clan LRM over a Clan ER-PPC. I found examples of Clan missile tech in use with the FWL in the IlClan Era, but I couldn't find any examples of Clan ER-PPC tech being utilized so sadly it was off the table .
For most of these DA/Ilkhan designs I put forward I have usually found some kind of example in an official variant of said tech (tech family) being used by that state actor. There are a couple of exceptions...(AWS-12M, and the ERS-4I)
