So with Samak making an appearance on Solaris7 and me pushing this site as a reasonable replacement for S7s former glory, how well are the servers backed up? I survived 3 crashes of Solaris7. I've lost more designs and fluff then I can remember at this point. I've lost more in my own computer crashes over the years. So my question/concern is, what are the odds of losing everything here as well?

So I'm actually kind of hyper-focused on backups and not wanting to lose stuff (hence why I've got a RAID configuration on my home desktop). You'll be happy to hear that first-and-foremost, I actually pay for a virtual private server (shhh, don't tell the wife). Because of that, the stability and uptime are top-notch (can't remember the last time this site was down), and the actual chance of a catastrophic failure happening where they are unable to restore things is significantly reduced. Having said that, I pay an additional fee for advanced backup features. That means I have the following:
  • File system backups occurring every 7 days
  • Database backups every 3 days
I also download a backup of the database during routine development cycles (probably 3-5 times a month). What that means is, in a catastrophic event where the server explodes and I need to revert to these backups, at most you would lose 3 days worth of unit designs if the failure happens at the tail-end of the backup window.

This is also one of the reasons I allow downloading units in batch. So you could do an initial download of all your designs in Record Sheet and/or MegaMek formats. Then setup a reminder for yourself to do the same once a month for anything that was created in that period.

Honestly, this site is probably more setup for disaster recover than CGLs own sites!
