There's a hurricane heading my way. I have to wait till six in the morning before I'll know if its time to pack the trunk with minis, toss the computer in the back seat and head for high ground. And clothes, yeah, not's not forget clothes.

For years new we've had these blasted hurricanes heading right for us just to veer to one side or the other and slam into Houston or Lake Charles at the last moment. It gotten so even us native type residents don't remember what its like to stay home and ride one out.

But it looks like I may well be doing that or driving up to Austin in another day and a half. Ah, well. I've got the food and flashlight batteries. But come morning I've really got to hunt down some duct tape to put on the windows, Wal-mart was all out of duct tape tonight.

No kidding. I used to live in Lousiana, so I know rain. Now I live in tornado swept Indiana (one hit down the street a few days ago) so I know wind. I hope it swerves 'round you though, big weather like that is better off being avoided.

Good luck!

Its up to a class four now, real bad mojo for hurricanes. But the bad part of it is only 50 miles wide and looks like it will hit in Louisiana. So I've decided to stay.

My Dad is in charge of the country road crews here so he's going to stay. And my neighbor is a county official so my mother and I are going to ride it out with our neighbors at the nice stone courthouse downtown.

I suppose I could stay here at home. We have no concern for flooding, we have a large levee to protect against that. But I just have this dang forboding that the big sliding glass door in the kitchen is going to bite the dust no matter how much tape I put on it. And if I lose that door or some windows and the inside of the house gets trashed and soaked. Well, I just don't want to get stuck sitting in my hall closet for 8 or 10 hours feeling depressed about the state of my carpet. And my books, I could really lose it if I had to spend the whole storm watching my books get wet and whipped all over the house by the wind.

Better to play cards all night at the courthouse and come back to an intact house afterward, or at least have the shock of needing my house insurance hit me all at once.

But you know, its a good thing the hurricane came now. Just today I had a letter from my insurance company. It seems the state of Texas has made laws that screw with insurance companies one time too many and Farmers Insurance is dropping all house insurance in the state effective Nov 1 until the state govt. takes back their new regulations.

My parents had State Farm and they dropped their own insurance this year when it went over 3 grand for a year. Their house is paid for, the State Farm wanted all that money, and their new policy wouldn't pay for hail damage, flood damage, lightning, damage, lots of other damage, pretty much nothing but fire and burglars.

I'd like to blame the governor or his opponent for that. But they're so busy blaming each other on TV its hard to tell which party did it and which party let it happen.

However this goes down, all my battletech stuff is in the car inside the garage where it will stay and I'll stick the computer in the back seat before I leave for the courthouse tonight. I figure my minis and Btech books and the stuff on my hard drive are my only truly non-replaceable possesions. I would truly grieve the loss of my book collection as I've spent about 25 years of my 34 years creating it, but in the end none of them are signed or limited editions and with money they could all be replaced eventually.

But losing a dozen Archer minis all painted by me? No way could I ever replace those! Wish me luck and I'll be back during the weekend some time to say how it played out.

Oh yeah, remember how I said that hurricanes keep heading for us here in SE Texas and then turning aside. There's actually a theory about why that happens so much. We have a lot of refineries here and the theory is that they generate a lot a warm air that creates a kind of buffer for our area that makes it hard for a hurricane to hit us dead on.

Here's hoping it works this time too.

Update.

Yep, it missed me. All that preparing and the dang hurricane tried to wipe out Louisiana like all the other hurricanes do. Right now one of my neighbors is outside mowing his lawn it rained so much around here. What with tape all over my windows and the garage door pulled down and all,I feel kinda disappointed.

But what the hell, it got me out of work for two days and since I'm in a govt union deal I may well get paid anyway since there was an official evacuation called. (voluntary that is, in Texas there is no mandatory evacuation)

Every year we say around here "It's been to long since we got hit, we can't get lucky forever. This one's gonna hit us." And then we get lucky again. The last time a hurricane hit us was a decade ago and it fizzled out before it made landfall, just made a little bit of rain.
