Overview:
The Advanced Forces Logistical Support or AFLS series are a series Industrial Mechs
commissioned by the SLDF for the purpose of accompanying advanced forces in pushes in to and
beyond enemy lines, where a force might need to operate beyond supply lines for an extended
period of time. The AFLS series of Mechs share the common traits of being fusion powered,
lightly armored, jump capable units that escort BattleMech forces into any environment.
Starting with the AFLS Mk 4, the line was built to BattleMech standards and utilized the
rarely utilized Tripod design. The AFLS Mk 5 builds on the strengths of the AFLS Mk 4 and
increases its tonnage and support capacity.
Capabilities:
The AFLS series was originally divided into two designs: the AFLS-1 and AFLS-2. The AFLS Mk
4 was designed to replace both in order to minimize construction costs while maximizing the
quantity of cargo and utility that could be sent with a force. However, the AFLS Mk 4 was a
purely civilian minded support unit that lacked any offensive capabilities that had to be
kept far from the front lines. Thus, the AFLS Mk 5 was drafted.
Massing at 100 tons, the AFLS Mk 5 like the AFLS Mk 4 was constructed using the more
expensive but more capable standards used in BattleMech construction instead of those used
for Industrial Mechs. This resulted in an increase in capability and capacity per cubic ton
of mass. In an effort to further the units capacity, the rarely utilized Tripod motive
system was used in order maximize stability and maneuverability while retaining the units
arms necessary for the mounting of the critical equipment.
The AFLS Mk 5 is capable of providing a force with a reserve of 2.73 tons of water, 1.74
tons of refrigerated food stores, and 9 tons of internal for cargo or infantry. The AFLS Mk
5 supplements its 9 tons of internal storage with the ability to use the left arm mounted
Lift Hoist to carry an impressive 50 tons of external cargo without a loss in its ground
speed or a max speed of 54.0 kph.
In addition, AFLS Mk 5 supplies its company with a salvage arm, a spot welder, a spotlight
for night work, a light fluid suction system, and the ability to carry a team of 4 MechTechs
and their Astechs for the maintenance and repairs of whatever force the AFLS is deployed
alongside. These features supply an advanced force with the amenities of a field workshop
for repairs and maintenance.
Unfortunately, the AFLS Mk 5 does not include the pair of CargoLifter Exoskeletons to assist
in the movement cargo and aid repairs that the Mk 4 carried. Instead, the ALFS Mk 5 is
designed to use its internal storage to carry a company of foot infantry; while this was a
possible feature of the Mk 4, the Mk 5's cargo bays primary purpose is to provide an
advanced force with infantry support.
The largest departure for the Mk 5 from previous models is the inclusion of offensive
weaponry. The AFLS Mk 5 carries a Thumper artillery cannon supplied by 60 rounds of
ammunition of up to 3 different types. Thus, any force outfitted with a Mk 5 will also
include minor artillery support. In addition, the Mk 5 carries a single small pulse laser
to ward off any enemy infantry that should stumble upon it. Lastly, the Mk 5 is equipped
with an additional 3 tons (4 tons total) of communication equipment that allows it to
coordinate forces as well as connect to any orbiting satellites.
The largest deficit of the Mk 5 is that it carries only about 3 days of water supply for the
planned 118 person force (4 Offensive Mech pilots, 2 AFLS pilots, 28 technicians, and 84
infantry). To offset this weakness, the unit is equipped with a light suction system and
purifier to take on environmental water to be turned into potable water. Should no safe
source of water be expected, the Mk 5 can resort to carrying additional water supplies using
its lift hoist.
Overall, these design choices allow the AFLS Mk 5 to escort and supply a lance of
BattleMechs and a company of infantry deployed forward of friendly lines for up to 15 days
or more without contact with a supply line in every environment you will find a BattleMech
force.
