Overview:
To bolster its naval defense capabilities the Tharkad militia forces called for a
semi-mobile artillery platform.
It should be able to linger in coastal swamps and between rocky coastlines under heavy
camoflage for a long time until an unsuspecting enemy could be taken under artillery fire.
Taatyana Trans-Oceanic Shipyards answered with an armed and heavily armored 180 ton motor
barge with an exceptional low draft.
Capabilities:
The Monitor II is armed with two massive artillery guns (naval variants of the venerable
Long Tom III) in a heavily armored turret. Eight tons of ammunition give ample battle
endurance and a small communication array makes sure to keep in contact with several forward
observers.
As it is meant to function with only a minimum of resupply it features a lot of equipment
rarly found on combat units.
The Monitor II carries a crew bay for up to 30 people even though a full complement would
result in a very cramped living space. In longer periods of inactivity these vessels tend to
accumulate heated cabins on the top deck.
Also it is equipped with a full-blown field kitchen and enough water and food for a full
complement for 30 days.
A stern-mounted lift hoist helps with resupply, mostly executed by small cargo submarines,
and three mounted searchlights, sponson and turret mounted, help with night operations
(there use is mostly forbidden when the militia is on high alert though).
Five tons of general cargo contain spare parts and repair equipment.
If (or better: when) the Monitor II is finally spotted by the enemy a Guardian ECM offers
some protection and it carries a hefty 32.5 tons of armor.
As the engine should only be used for some close range maneuvering and onboard power the
speed is at a bare minimum.
Longrange relocation would be executed by heavier naval vessels.
Deployment:
With its very special mission profile the Monitor II was never produced in great numbers but
could be found on several water rich planets in lyran space.
Variants:
There were never official variants but in the middle of the 2d Sucession War at the latest
most Monitor IIs were stripped of their (now lostech) ECM systems. Some lost their valuable
artillery guns for use in groundbased units too.
Of these a handfull was reequipped with LRM or autocannons to be used as indirect fire
platforms or semi-stationary Flak-batteries.
