Okay do you guys and gals think that the Houses of the Inner Sphere would still be sending out colonial groups to expand their control or would this not be the case any more?
I am looking for some idea on this, anyone given the subject of House colonies any thought or come up with anything?

Out into the unclaimed areas of the Periphery...there the areas between the areas that are know to be claimed by one group or house that can be colonized....

I actually doubt it.
1. The Federated Suns and Lyran Alliance are still too busy repairing themselves from the Civil War
2. The Draconis Combine got their military mauled by the Ghost Bears.
3. The Free Worlds League might be, but if the real Thomas Marik does surface, it'll probably start a civil war there.
4. The Cappellan Confederation's alliance with the Taurians and the Canopians could theoretically allow for further exploration, but the two Prehiphery states are most likely going to claim the planets for themselves.
The only party that really is exploring is Comstar's Explorer Corps.

If there's places to go I figure someone's probably going to go there

Using your two above examples I would like to suggest the following...Right after the US Civil War even with rebuilding of the South, westward expansion took off with leaps and bounds. Same could therotically happen here.
Both the Combine and FS and the LA all gain from having their citizens expand outwards and thus gain more income and export areas.

It would even be easy to say that's what would logically happen as people move away from any destruction the war caused to start a new.

Thus the same could be happening in the two houses most effected by the lastest war...

well, IMHO i don't think the houses are colinizing.
i believe its the large corporations that are funding exploration and colinization programs. always looking for better, cheeper, and easier to attain materials.
the houses, if they were smart, would allow these programs..... then after its suchess or failure then decide to step in and try and run the place. probibly thru agreements by the company that setup shop in the first place.
thats how i likly see it.

AFAIK the Taurians and the Canopians are colonizing new worlds. That`s why they built a battlemech for the Colonial Marshals. The Inner Sphere powers (and clanners) seem to have a lot of their equipment constantly tied down by military concerns, thus a shortage of transport for any colonists. Corporations are likely to try, but not if it doesn`t generate them some hefty profits. Jumpships not hauling produce to market are also not bringing in money, only costing you maintenance and crew salaries. And of course it also costs you whatever the ship could have brought in if left on it`s route...

We know that the systems listed on the Inner Sphere map are inhabited systems, with uninhabated systems not listed. And although the shared borders between the Great Houses shift and adjust to take into account military and/or political actions, for the most part the external borders have not adjusted since the time of the Star League. This would lead us to believe that even the Star League was unable to colonize those planets during the height of their technology levels.
Which pushes us out to the Periphery. It's almost definate that there are semi- and inhabatable systems that are beyond the Periphery territories (except towards the Galactic Core-I'll cover those below). It's also possible that there are planets that can be inhabated within the Periphery territories, but for whatever reasons the Periphery governments did not colonize them. If the reason was technical, it might take a technological trade or a treaty with a Great House to bring in the required equipment and/or knowhow to sustain life there. Unless, of course, the top condition applies.
Now the Coreward Periphery area, that'll probably give us the greatest chance for new colonies. The Clans control that space, and even though they might not have focused directly on colonization systems advances, non-related systems could be used in the process. There still exists the possibility for technical hurdles, however, another question would be the Clan's desire to colonize new systems. Of the ones in the Inner Sphere, the chances of new colony projects would be (from highest to lowest) the Ghost Bears, the Nova Cats, with the Wolves and the Jade Falcons being about equal. As for the Home Clans, I think they face the same arrangement as the Star League. However...
My best guess for new systems would be along either the Exodus Road or the current path used by the Clans to move between the Inner Sphere and the Kerensky Cluster. A good amount of traffic moving, coupled with a higher technology base, would give the best chances for new colonies. The only question is would the Clans be interested in colonizing new systems? It would have to be for something they can't find elsewhere, else the Scientist Caste would request the Warrior Caste to issue a Trial of Possessition for whatever they're looking for.
