Steve Vai is one of those oddities of the rovk world. Though he worked with some of the best metal bands in his career (Alice Cooper, David Lee Roth), and even worked with the legendary Frank Zappa and Joe Satriani, he fits no genre. Much like his orignal teacher, Satriani, Vai prides himself on his ability to create new and beautiful music with the guitar, whenever he feels so inclined. Not all of Steve Vai's recordings are masterful works, but all are orignal and full of emotion. Thats the exact tone the album "Alive in an Ultra World" tries to take.

While touring in 2000 Vai would take in the history and feel of each of the countries he visited. If so compelled, Steve would write a song, using the musical background of each country. Then, after only a few rehearsals Vai and his band would record the song, live, at one of their shows. Not every country got to hear its song, and so Vai released his recordings for the world on a 2 CD set.

There is a total of 15 tracks on 2 CDs. It comes in at about 100 minutes of music, but unlike most live albums, each song is completely original. Each song is incredible in its own right. Of particular interest are the 2 songs "Devil's Food" and "Babushka". Both songs have some interesting improv due to technical difficulties while recording.

If you are a fan of the guitar gods, like Steve Vai, or looking for an overall good feeling album, I reccomend this one.
