Late Wednesday afternoon the weather finally cooperated with my schedule, and I was able to take my Private Pilot checkride. I passed!! The paperwork is going through to the FAA right now; I'll have my temporary license in a day or so and the permamnent copy will arrive soon after.

Please excuse me if I'm somewhat cocky for the next while. The pilot's ego showed up about 3 minutes after I was told that I had passed, and it looks like it won't wear off for a few more days now at least.

Now you have to find a suitable aircraft. Some time ago they had a complete MiG-21 on e-bay, all papers, manuals etc. Checked out and approved as a private plane in the US, some states at least. Perfect

Yeah that Mig was under $60,000 when I saw it, it think it was $54,000, probably sold now though.

I'd have to get a high performance endorsement added to my license before I could fly that puppy. My license limits me to engines of 200 horsepower or less...

Besides, considering how close I am to Fort Hood and the Crawford Ranch Prohibited Zone, I'd rather not fly anything that might be mistaken for enemy aircraft. The guys on the base have a history of shooting the wrong targets (they artillery guys actually shelled a nearby town about a year or so ago, and some Bradley gunner shot up what was then the brand new freshly arrived Longbow Apaches). Then again, flying a Soviet aircraft might accidentally be safer...

Oh yeah, that MiG is also *slightly* beyond my means at the moment, by say, all of the purchase price give or take $20

Well, until I get a job that pays me far more in comparison to what I actually do (anybody know of such a job that's available?) I'll do like most pilots and rent aircraft whenever I want to go somewhere. I need about 50 hours of cross-country time logged before I can start training for my instrument rating (flying solely by instruments instead of being at the mercy of the weather), and while I'm doing that I'll try out as many different aircraft types as I can and see what I like the most. Then I'll start socking away some money and look for an airplane I can afford. A small airplane like what I trained in that is used can be found for as little as $18,000, but those will probably be pretty ratty or run down. Something in the decent range of used aircraft will start around $30,00. A good one gets up to about $100,000 or more if it has all the bells and whistles, but if I'm plunking down that much I'll just by a new one. I trained in Cessna aircraft, so I'm a little partial to them at the moment, but I'm going to try the Grumann Tiger at the FBO in Killeen because I have heard nothing but good things about how smooth it responds in flight. Plus you can slide back the canopy on this model and fly the old fashioned way with the wind in your face and your scarf trailing behind you (note to self: get aviator sunglasses and silk scarf).

If anybody has suggestions on what types of aircraft are nice to own (affordable, easy to maintain, not too many quirks) and can give me a least a rough idea of the specifications, I'll add it to my list of aircraft to possibly buy when I get money. Thanks!

Aff, it has indeed been long awaited. I anticipate further training, but at a more leisurely rate on my own terms in the future.

Sure, if I'm ever in your area or you're in mine, give me a holler and if I have the time, cash, and aircraft available, we'll do the $100 Hamburger Lunch.
