I was hoping one of you who reads novels regularly could answer a question, if possible. Is there a general period of time that passes between when a book is released in trade paperback and mass market paperback? I want to buy a book that came out 3 months ago, but it is currently only available in trade paperback. Naturally I want it in mass market paperback edition. So I was curious if there was a general guideline that publishers use.

I could be wrong but's it seems to be about year to a year and half for some to go from hardback to paperback.
I know that if the sales of the hardback are high then the publisher will rush the book into paperback...
I normally wait till two summers have gone by and then start asking about the book being in paperback...
Right now David Drake has three novels out that are in hardback all came out this fall...so I am looking for them to be in paperback in about 2 years max...hoping for sooner...
Best place to check on this is either Barnes and Nobles or Waldenbooks, they normally can give you an approximent time frame on when to expect the hardback book in paperback form...

Remember the book isn't in a hardcover edition. It came out as trade paperback. So I guess it's one step closer? Oh well, if I have to wait I will.

I'd bet most trade paperbacks are never made into "regular" paperbacks....

Well, in this case, it may be. The first book in the series was 700+ pages. I read reviews about it and everyone was commenting on how it was 500+ pages of material. Well, I didn't understand the wide difference until I realized the reviews were done off the trade paperback, which, when converted was 700+ pages in mass paperback. The new novel is also 500+ pages in trade paperback. I guess Stackpole likes to write, which is good, because I get my moneys worth.
