I ran across some old notes the other day and here is an idea I thought you folks would love to toss around and comment on...

Would giving each platoon of infantry a 1 shot, .5 point of damage missile make them more effective or too powerful for the game as things are currently written?

The total number of hits from these weapons could be added in to the overall damage infantry does or it could be a seperate roll/attack...

So what do you folks think...

That's reasonable, and makes rifle infantry somewhat useful.

And for a real world equivalent, it would be like the grenade launchers attached to M-16s and other Assult Rilfes.

Not really, considering those are already in the game as Compact Grenade Launchers...

More like it would the LAW and V-LAW launchers...I could see those as being more able to do this dmg than a mini-grenade...

I can't wait for the infantry platoon construction rules to come out in the next few months...

What's a V-LAW? Vechicle-mounted LAW or something?

The V-LAW is a Very Light Anti-Armor Weapon.

One thing I've done for a long time for my own custom units is use the LAW rocket. If you seen the art work for an infantry SRM-2 then you know it isn't much more that an RPG that shoot 2 instead of 1.

So what I do is equip the platoon with rifles or lasers and say that each man carries 2 single-shot disposable SRMs with a 9-hex range. That gives a platoon some nice but brief firepower, though it does make for a lot of extra hit rolls (1 roll per SRM). And I've always liked the thought of infantry, man-portable and semi-portable weapons that can make a mech feel concerned. And one-shot tubes certainly makes a saner proposition for a ground pounder than running up to the mech with a freaking satchel charge.

And if your troops had the time to dig in and have APC support, as mine always do. Why those APCs carry a fair amount of rations, ammo, and SRM tubes. So your entrenched platoon can easily have assembled near to hand a triple normal supply of these one shot tubes. And the the Clan mechs won't even see them until each squad position opens fire at close range...

You know, now that I have some of that Skytrex infantry with Dragons and TOWs, I'll have to invent a man-portable LRM shooter that does say 3 points of damage. I especially like it when infantry are something a light or medium mech has to take seriously.

Depends on what the range of the missile is. Otherwise, they already more than that much damage. They just need to be close enough to do it. Which is the main problem with infantry. They usually don't last long enough to get close and hurt anything.

Using level 3 rules for splitting up a platoon to get the squad bonus tends to help a bit though. As well as using the lvl 3 rule for swarming & capturing vehicles is fun too.

No, no. They're track grease. Or SPUTS (Self-propelled pop-up targets!)

I don't know how American Infantry works, but, in Canada, every Infantry Platoon gets one Medium Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher, (And it's reloadable!) And Company HQ also gets one, (Meaning 4 in a Company.) I always pictured that as an SRM launcher. With two or three LAWs (we call them M-72s) per Section (Eight guys, ten if they have APCs and you count the vehicle crew!) Plus each vehicle usually carries three M-72s as well.
Also, each Platoon gets a small mortar tube and a 7.62 MG, as does Company HQ.

Plus, in every Infantry Battalion we have an Anti-Armour Platoon equipped with some APCs mounting Tow Missiles, plus some dismounted TOWs and various other tools.

If there are weapon equivalents for all of these in BTech, that gives the SPUTS alot more options on the battlefield.

They are there via TR-3026 and the old 2ndED MW Companion...thing is they are treated solely as MECHWARRIOR weapons not as battlefield weapons...you end up with a lot die rolling to get at the most 2 points of mech damage...

Hence the idea of mine to give the infantry some bite...and I do have some rules/ideas for support weapons like Recoiless Rifles and ATGMs etc...

I have TR-3026, but haven't really looked too closely at it, other than to see which weapons are roughly equivelant to the one's I've used. Are there rules for using those in a BTech game, or is it strictly Mechwarrior?

Well, without actual numbers to crunch, I don't think we can really say how much of an effect an addition like this would have. Though my initial thoughs is the results would be closer to more effective rather than too powerful.

Something else to think of is what kinds of infantry units are we talking here. Rifle, Laser, SRM? Something like this might not work well with all kinds.

It works well enough with all of them, but I had intendend for only SMG, LASER and RIFLE platoons getting these little missiles...

Would the idea of given the infantry heavy weapons like four Recoilless Rifles or something similar a good idea? They wouldn't have other weapons, well beyond side arms, so their primary job would be to man the RRs...

Anyone have any ideas on this one? I think four would work out 7 men per gun, keeping it into account of the BT numbers here...what do you folks think?
