Calling this a zombie horror flick is an unfair comparison. In night of the living dead the zombies shuffled after you in a macabre, relentless pack. In 28 days later they travel in smaller bunches, but these zombies run faster than Carl Lewis!

The movie starts out in a wry manner, having the end of British culture brought about by self righteous animal advocates who wouldn't know their ass from their elbow raiding a biological research lab and releasing a highly contagious disease. At least the advocates get what they deserve.

Poor Jimmy, a bicycle messenger who spent his last lucid moments getting hit by a car, wakes up 28 days later to find that all of London has gone on holiday and left him in a hospital bed, his hospital room locked and the key pushed under the door for him should he wake up.

Poor Jimmy woke up instead of lingering in a coma.

The filmmakers got great shots of Jimmy wandering the totally deserted streets of London. A very eerie scene. Eventually Jimmy hooks up with Mark and Selena, two survivors who have adapted to the new world order very quickly indeed. After a couple of adventures the survivors hook up with Frank the taxi driver and his daughter Hannah.

The castaways pick up faint radio transmissions telling them where there is at least one surviving outpost of civilization. On the way there is a refreshing scene where one of the characters is the mouthpiece of the audience, telling the other characters how monumentally stupid the actions they are contemplating are. Unfortunately poor sense prevails.

Eventually the survivors hook up with the Army, and things go from bad to worse.

This is a good science fiction film. There is little here that requires suspension of disbelief, except perhaps the speed on the infection. With AIDS, SARS, and Anthrax a bio thriller may be the scareist thing I've seen in a long time.

These Zombies are the new imporved model. Zombie 2.0 is a much better representation of modern, hip, fashionable Undead...
