How do you guys deside? I personally have a really hard time naming my mechs and coming up with fluff. thoughs are the two biggest reasons for my lack of designs posted. I atleast play around with 3 designs everyday and often come up with some mechs that look pretty good on paper but never test them in real combat because of the lack of a proper name (names are required under the house rules here, not sure why)

where'd the insperation for the design come from? favorite song? movie?
if you end up stumped just use these to designations as bluffs: X and YF.

Usually I just pick the name of an animal or thing that I like. In the case that I do not have a name I just give it a designation, something like Advanced Mech 606 or whatever. Truth is I haven't bothered to design a mech in a while, since it seemed like most of the good designs already exist.

I use a number of differant naming designs I use name sof existing companys for manufecturers some times like with the Harley-Davison mechs I have been flooding the forum with I use the company name followed by a numerical designation (e.g. Harley-Davison HD-7B) for armour and tanks and I use name of existing machine with the manufacturer name (e.g. Ford Pinto ) for Clans I use either a name that would match the mechsClan (Blizzard for Ice Hellion) our the mechs mission (wayfinder for a Cloud Cobra scout mech.)I hope that helps.

Nothing bad can be said about cheerleaders.

Lol I can just the a lance os Busty's now.
I generally tend to save the name for the last as well. and I have spent 2 hours looking at the screen trying to come up with a name. But the best places I can find inspiration are from Novels, history and mythology. Animals next, and in a pinch other games, Age of Empires has named several of my mechs or provided inspiration for names. Ill also try to decide what kind of mech it is (assult, heavy, scout, deep recon ect.) and name it accordingly.

just Curious but what names have you used from AOE? I bought a book called Military 100 (the top 100 most influential military leaders) and have used two of the names from it. (Scipio and Clausewitz) Most of the people in it are either Naval Commanders (not fitting for mechs) or have been used already.

Some theme or something funny.
A close-combat mech should have a gruesome name that fits it's specialty. Skullcrusher isn't original, but it's brutal.
Or laugh at the design. A friend designed a mech called the Pam' (after Pamela Anderson). It's identifying features were twin AC/20s, mounted strategically in both side torsos... He's still angry because the Ultra-Pam can't be built without Clan tech.

I have a rather hefty book, called "The Complete Encyclopedia of Arms and Weapons" from which I draw a lot of names, like my FRR LRM boat circa 3049 is a Yari (a japanese pike carried by foot soldiers for use against mounted samurai), my Davion fast mover is a Scramasax (a light throwing axe), etc.
Other names I just pluck from the air for humor sake, like my Canopian High-tech design, which wears a MASC, carries a Probe, a Paddle (treat as a mace), and of course is a Master (C3)... I called it the DOM-01X Dominatrix. Matches up with my SUB-01X Submissive, which of course is a Slave with a long tom.
Or my 'Investigator', who's a Stealthy NARC. _________________ Happyness is just a word to me

Hmm... where could I pick up a copy of that? oh and BTW I'm a history major with special interest in the Late Roman-Middle ages, Sengoku era Japan, and Three Kingdoms Era china, so I knew what both of thoughs weapons were ^_^ Sadly most of the good weapon names are already used, such as the No-dachi and Nagainata.

Well I have Used the Legionnaire (posted on Mordels) And several other unit names as well. I think I have used Pikeman, Swordsman, Samuari, Petard, Aztec, and a few others. Most are ok designs. The Legionnaire has been my favorite so far.
