If only they had discovered the basics of hygiene, deodorant and air conditioning! Think of all the human suffering that could have been avoided!

Deodorant is what the average Russian wears when he goes abroad. 
But seriously, most of France isn't used to heat like we've had in Europe this summer. The sick and the elderly can't cope with it, and retirement homes seldom have air conditioning since it hasn't been needed. There's probably a good deal of deaths from heat all over, but CNN was checking out France in particular.
Tell you what: I find temperatures above 20 degrees Centigrade unpleasant, unless I'm taking a sauna bath. That's when 80+ is fine... And we had a hot, hot summer here in Finland too, above 30 most days. I could barely wear my body armor at work even in the night!

20°C is 68°F...that is 15°F lower than the average summer day where Mordel & I live...add a dew point of 70° and you got yourself an uncomfortable day.
And that's nothing compared to a lot of the summers of people in the south.

From what I've heard, most of those deaths are in the elderly.
The two main factors that I've heard take the blame for the deaths are as follows:
1. From what I've heard, France as a culture does not like to put their elderly in retirement/nursing homes so if the children don't check up on them they can suffer serious health problems.
2. As a culture, France is used to extended summer holidays- even the doctors. These holidays can span entire months, and apparently a lot of the hospitals are shut down right now as a result.

Yeah...I WISH the average summer day was a mere 83 degrees F where I'm at...mid to upper 90s is more the norm, with VERY high humidity too...
So no...it ain't no dry heat where I'm at...

Highs in the Motor City are pretty much running in the 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit or 27-32 degrees Celsius with humidity in the 70%-95% range.Warm

We've had plenty of days like what Sir Henry described down here, but the 100+ is before the heat index kicks in. The humidity here is taking some getting used to, I just moved only 180 miles. I hear the people in Houston are really sucking it up as far as the mumidity goes.
So no, I have no sympathy for the French. Not that I ever did before, but especially not now. If you're not used to the heat (or the cold, at the opposite extreme, like if I were to go visist Alexander in Cnanada for example), then use your brain and do what you have to do to adjust. Drink more fluids, slow your activity level, basically just act like an overheating battlemech (i.e. don't carry infernos!).

110 summer average. 104 lows, 118 highs, 68 at night. plus an increased humidity do to storm activity. i'm not complainin.
