G3'03

These kinds of things are usually pretty cool...

Well, we get to the place (Concord Pavilion), get in and get to the merch section really fast. Tory and I both got the G3'03 long leeve shirt. Its really cool. Got to our seats after 10 minutes of confusion. Then it starts...

Ynwgwie. Honestly, this guy is impressive when playing. He shreds really fast...and thats about it. His songs dont really feel very strong. They really just seem to link the long solo and arpegio series'. Now, I am not a hater of guitar solo's, but I like structure too. Yngwie's music tonight lacked that. WHat it didnt lack was energy and throwing picks around. He musta checked 30 at the crowd in his set....very humorus. A few songs I recognized...Trilogy Sweet, Black Star, and I think Presto Vivace. The others were kinda a bluur. Yngwie gets a 7/10.

Steve Vai - There is no real reason for me to say anything. WHen the man comes out and starts his set with a 3 necked guitar, you know u are in for a show. He opened, then he and his band got to killing any sort of silence that might be around somewhere. One of the songs he and his lineup got together and played eachothers guitars and duel'd together. Once again Steve had Sheenan (I think) on bass, and the guy is amazing. Steve was easily the best show of the night. His expressions, mannerism and presence, as well as stage antics with his crew, were mind blowing. I wasnt sure on most of the songs, but I know he played part of Liberty, all of Whispering a Prayer and, of course, finished with "For the Love of God". Steve gets a 10/10

Joe Satriani - As always, flawless. His ability to play such wonderful songs live continually destroys any sense of reality I have. I am pretty sure his firt 2 CDs explain it..."Not of this Earth" and "Surfing with the Alien". Aye...I think he isnt human. While his actual stage presence isnt as large as Steve's...he makes up for it in stylistic playing. He doesnt shred his poor guitar to death (like Malmsteen). He doesnt make love to it and caress the music out, like Steve. Joe simply is a master of his weapon. The thing seems like an extsion of himself. He is the guitar when he plays. Playlist lacked a few I wanted...but it had Flying In a Blue Dream, Crystal Planet, Borg Sex, Always With Me Always With You and Summer Song. Joe gets a 9/10

G3 - The encore with all the guys on stage is truly a marvel. No matter how many times I see it, I will always be in awe of what goes on. When the solos break out, each has their own style, yet it fits. Yngwie shreds, Steve goes crazy, and Joe just puts the right notes in the right spots. Pure beauty. I dont remember all the songs...but i know Voodoo Child and Little Wing (i think) were in there, and they closed with La Grange. Awesome stuff. My biggest problem was Yngwie. He would do his solo, then instead of backing up with rythm while Steve would go...Yngwie would spin and twien his guitar, and generally keep attention on himself. Rather upsetting.

Anyways...I'd put this at a tie with my last G3 concert, but I did like Petrucci more than Yngwie. Cant wait for the next Satch, Vai or G3 tour!
