What is the most important choice when selecting a Mech? Piloting, Gunnery or Balance...

Both, of course. I can't well have a superior pilot in my finest, deadliest assault mech if he's a bad shot, can I? Likewise, he won't be allowed to risk that mech if he can barely keep it standing while shooting at things.

Well, I agree for situations where combat will be required. However, if my intent is to have a scout 'mech whose sole purpose it to avoid contact and run away, I don't give a hoot about how they shoot. I'm gonna put him in the fastest 'mech I have available and make sure he's the best Pilot available. If he can't hit the side of a barn but is able to turn that 'mech around on a dime, that's what I want. So, I feel it's more of a situational thing. The problem with most people on this board is they only ever think about 1 situation, and that's combat. There are other situations besides combat to consider.
Weather conditions also play a role. if the combat is on ice, then you're not going to be doing a lot of good laying on your back (in most cases), so piloting is slightly more important. If it's in a blizzard where your to-hits are higher, then it ain't gonna matter if you're on your back or not if you can't hit, so gunnery is slightly more important.
Situations, my friend, dictate what we do and do not do in life. Therefore, situations (at least for me) dictate which I deem the more important skill.

I agree with Mordel. There are so many situational modifiers to combat: weather, terrain, etc that it really just depends on what is going on.

I have a question. By both do you mean balancing both scores or having 1's in both scores would be great? I'm just curious (this question, of course, is for Sir Henry).
I'm still sticking with "depends" but I was just wondering bout that.

Right, Balancing them.
If you get a 6/2, 5/3, 4/4, 3/5 or a 2/6, which would you chose and why?
Or
Does your Piloting or Gunnery score dictate your mech selection???
I'll stick to my Tuxedo and my Mackerel Shorthair.... For now......

I stick to my answer that it is always situational. Sometimes you want a nive 4/5, 5/4 balance. But I've played in many games at conventions where people went with 2/6 or 6/2. It all depends on what goal you are trying to accomplish. I do feel both are important, but which one is more important at the time depends on the situation.

All things being equal your pilot had better have balanced skills.

I am the single guy who voted for gunnery. That does not mean I am a not situational guy who no matter what takes good gunners. No it means that unless it is an extreme situation I am going to put more weight on gunnery than piloting which gives me the nuts and bolts of probably never purposely picking a piloting skill lower than my gunnery.

definately balance, but if you're playing in Chihawk/Hardware's Mosh Pit I can tell you that Piloting comes in VERY HANDY!

Depends on the situation.. For example..
The Caverns of Hell and the Race game were both created to try to convince players that pilot skill was VERY important.
The Race it is rather obvious, the purpose of the game is to run around fast on Ferro and not plow into a wall. Even with an excellent gunner, you cannot possibly kill all the targets running by in a single round of fire.
The Caverns is another story. It is an underground cave facility, and many of the players decide that they want to be able to just outright kill their opponents. This isn't a bad theory with the exception for a few of the movement areas that can really screw you up if you can't make a decent pilot check.
In general though, I believe it depends on your mech type, and the surrounding terrain.
Assault mechs that barely move really don't need much of a pilot, if they fall down, prop and shoot. They turn into a pillbox..
Mediums and lights I particularly like decent pilot skills, as I tend to use mechs like this in areas where pilot checks are commonly made/missed..

Well this raises the question is it for just one pilot or is it for a lance that were are making a decision? the few times we have been given X amount of BV to make a force I generally tend to take fewer machines with better pilots. I prefer the 1/2 or the 2/3 piloting range. At a streach ill go 2/1 or 3/2 or even 4/2 (only if I have the dredded Wardog in my possession, can never keep that fricken thing standing, and the only mech I have failed 4 piloting skill rolls in a row on and I only needed 5's) But For the most part I try to go balanced. Ill choose the mechs I want and then get the best pilot I can for it.
