Hey all,
I was talking to Vagabond earlier and was thinking about infantry tactics in BattleTech, and wanted to post some ideas about unit organization. If this belongs in design submitions could someone please move it? Thanks!
TYPICAL INFANTRY COMPANY:
I see this as probably the most common company of infantry in the Inner Sphere. I'm using Squad Deployment and Mixed Platoons as a given rule cause that is sort of how they are described in the infantry rules for battletech, but this is for the regular board game.
COMPANY A
Platoon A - Foot
- Rifle Squad
- Rifle Squad
- SRM Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
Platoon B - Foot
- Rifle Squad
- Rifle Squad
- SRM Squad
- SRM Squad
Platoon C - Foot
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
- Flamer Squad
- Rifle Squad
Platoon D - Jump
- Rifle Squad
- Rifle Squad
- Rifle Squad
So you have an assault squad, mobile support squad, heavy support squad, and someone in the middle. Basically a fairly well rounded unit. You might attach a squad of special services:
Special Forces Squad - Foot
- Rifle Squad (ECM/Camo Suits)
Who would serve as snipers, infilitrators, etc.
A heavy suport company might look something like this:
COMPANY B
Platoon A - Mechanized
- Rifle Squad - AC/2 Field Gun
- Rifle Squad - AC/2 Field Gun
- Rifle Squad - AC/2 Field Gun
- Rifle Squad - AC/2 Field Gun
Platoon B - Mechanized
- Rifle Squad - AC/10 Field Gun
- Rifle Squad
- Rifle Squad - AC/10 Field Gun
- Rifle Squad
Platoon C - Mechanized
- Rifle Squad - AC/10 Field Gun
- Rifle Squad
- Rifle Squad - AC/10 Field Gun
- Rifle Squad
Platoon D - Mechanized
- SRM Squad
- SRM Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
So you have some big guns to provide field support, some lighter ones to provide anti aircraft work, or long range fire. And then you have some heavy squads that can sit in front of the guns and administer a beating if anything gets close. Or they can go hunting cause they are mechanized, like on jeeps or HUMVEEs. something like that.
COMPANY C
Platoon A - Mechanized
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
Platoon B - Mechanized
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
Platoon C - Mechanized
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
- Rifle Squad - Engineers
Platoon D - Mechanized
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
- Machine Gun Squad
This is obvious. Engineers and Guards. Use APCs for transport and you have plenty of armor to go around as well!
THen you could have paratrooping jump units, all sorts of stuff. Has anyone else thought about this as much as I have?

The roleplay of the Circus in the house rules basically had all of the infantry Paratroop trained. That is they all could use parachutes.
Later there was a "heavy" infantry unit that was armed with Zeus Rifles and trained for antimech work. These guys would all target the cockpit with called shots. Considering a zeus rifle does 1 point of mech armor damage, a whole platoon firing on a mech could take it down if enuogh of the called shots hit. 25-30 tries is a lot.
when elementals came on the scene, a platoon per mech or infantry company became "armored" infantry. They were organized as 5 squads of 5 and a command squad. A squad would go with each lance or platoon, and you would still have 15 "rovers" left over for special tasks.
Laser or SRM infantry was usually deployed regularly as battle field security. Mainly at choke points and as F/O's for artillery. The Heavy and Armored infantry was deployed with armor and mechs as part of the battleforce.

I just picked up Combat Operations. Expect more information soon! Also, under Field Guns it says ANY autocannon. As far as i'm concerned this means that you can even have RACs as well!!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You are correct...infantry can use any AC, from standard to RAC and I believe they can also be equipped with gauss rifles as field guns as well...
And yes...the rules are pretty nice to have, aren't they?

if you increase the squad size to ten men, you could have 2 Guass Rifle field guns. That is soooo wrong, and yet..... so right! Even one guass rifle is good.
I remember reading somewhere about Russian infantry in stalingrad disassembling and then rebuilding 76mm artillery pieces in buildings, and ambushing german tanks with them. Imagine having your atlas rumbling down the street and getting hit with a guass slug in the back at point blank range?!

Ok here is my first platoon, designed to be mobile and deadly! its alllll mechanized.
Raven's Platoon of the Magnets
----------------------------------------
Squad 1 - 10 Men (Wheeled)
Primary Weapon: Thunderstroke Guass Rifle
Secondary Weapon: Mandrake Guass Pistol
Support Weapon: Grand Mauler Guass Cannon
Support Weapon (2): None
Squad 2 - 10 Men (Wheeled)
Primary Weapon: Thunderstroke Guass Rifle
Secondary Weapon: Mandrake Guass Pistol
Support Weapon: Grand Mauler Gauss Cannon
Support Weapon (2): Grand Mauler Gauss Cannon
Squad 3 - 10 Men (VTOL)
Primary Weapon: Thunderstroke Guass Rifle
Secondary Weapon: Mandrake Guass Pistol
Support Weapon: None
Support Weapon (2): None
Squad 4 - 10 Men (Wheeled)
Primary Weapon: Thunderstroke Guass Rifle
Secondary Weapon: Mandrake Guass Pistol
Support Weapon: Grand Mauler Guass Cannon
Support Weapon (2): None
Field Guns: 2 Guass Rifles
Expensive as hell, but DAMN! Consider the damage you could inflict!!!!!! Slowest squad moves at three, and has two huge guns. The fastest squad moves at 5. This unit could inflict about 46 damage in one volley if they all hit.
NICE!

It is called Btech and not BattleTroops. Rolling for every man is horse hocky. But if you want to you can. Do some of you remember the old 3026 book with the personal equipment in the back? Gave the chance for doing damage to a Mech when you did hit, most were very low.
so how much did this unit cost? Same as a Firestarter? You do need lots of infantry for loads of reasons but to be dedicated mech killers is stupid. Nothing would suck worse for this group to run into rioters or mass infantry. Plus with mechs you can patch them up. Infantry you bury a lot of them and then have to buy replacement equipment to put on greenies.
AWAD- Infantry can cause havoc...... if you let them

Are you talking in term of BV or c-bills?
I thought that the 2nd should be very expensive
