Stuck at work here until about 7PM tonight. My office just got passed by the leading edge of a huge weather front. There were 2-3 tornados spotted within the county. One of them passed by our office building and knocked over several HUGE trees. Luckily no one was hurt but there are several cars buried by limbs and one pickup that got hit by the trunk of a tree and is completly toast. If my Suburban was one parking space to the left it would have been crushed also. Thankfully only a few branches are leaning against the side.
After looking at the damage out there just from the wind you cannot help but have a respect for nature.

Yeah Oafman, that was an exciting drive home.....nothing like having to dodge trees that are bending down to try and tag my jeep as I drive past. Lots of flooding too, you shoulda seen the huge splash/wake shooting from my tires as I romped through it!! Much fun! _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

On the 27th floor of our office the windows were flexing in and out. The cool green behind the black wall cloud was eerie. Being an Okie, I kind of miss them up in Michigan. These were not the clean crisp ones that I am use to in Tornado Alley. But down there the best I could do was a 12 story building on OU campus. And from there you can see Kansas and Texas.
AWAD- Remember folks bathroom is the safest place when these things hit

only if the tub is cast iron or in the center of the house. The center room of the house if you don't have a better place to be. I chose the old cold war shelter in the basement if you have one.
I only had to deal with that stuff when I was stationed in Memphis and Jacksonville. I will take earthquakes in California over tornadoes and hurricanes any day. once they go thru they leave you alone with the damage, no flooding or continued bad weather to get in the way of repairs.

I lived on the east coast for about 16 years. Hurricanes are much niccer than tornadoes. Since I moved to Ohio all I hear is how tornadoes are sooooo destructive and hurricanes are nothing. This observation was based solely on average and maximum wind speeds. I will say this, I do NOT want to be near a tornado. I have been through several hurricanes. Hurricanes are nicer because you can see them coming. Period. Tornadoes have a higher wind speed and are unpredictable, however their effects are relatively compact compared to hurricanes. Yes a tornado can destroy a whole town, but a hurricane can destroy several states. Period. Tornadoes get wind speeds up to 300 mph and can be a mile in diameter. Well hurricanes get up to 150+mph but they can maintain that over hundreds even thousands of square miles.
In review. I don't like tornadoes, but as an ex-surfer, I like hurricanes. It drives the tourists away and kicks up the surf. You want to live forever? _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Back over here in the UK where the worst we get is a rather nasty storm or about a foot of snow. Lfe can get pretty boring, however if you enjoy rain. Come on over!
England, the only country where you cna go t bed for a year, and wake up to find the same weather! Nothing ever changes, apart from we get evermore crap governments and public services get more and more useless!
What a country!

Tornadoes. As a Texas boy, I've been through my share. The noise, the destruction, the adrenaline rush. Nothing like a tornado to make you live life.

I have spent most of my life in states that regularly get tornadoes. So I have a love/hate relationship with them. I keep telling myself I need to get out of this area before my luck runs out. I have been within 1/2 a mile of at least 3-6 (lost count as a kid). This most recent one at work proved again just how powerful nature is.

Let's not forget the tidal waves and the enormous amount of rain and floods you get with Hurricanes.
Luckily Panama doesn't get either.
