While reading through some of these threads an odd thought came upon me. Has anyone setup rules for a LAM design that can be used like an aerospace fighter? In other words a mech that can enter and exit the atmosphere on it own without the need of a drop ship. I can think of several advantages to such a design. Any thoughts?

Something like that. Did not think about Robotech though. I have not done much with that stuff for about a decade. Mostly I picture mechs able to provide fighter cover for dropships that cannot provide much of their own.

If I remeber the rules correctly, LAM's can already be used as aerospace fighters.

You are correct. LAMs can operate in three modes, 'mech, land-air 'mech, and aerospace fighter. The 'mech and aerospace fighter modes are governed by rules identical to those for non-convertable units. Thus, an LAM can deploy from an orbiting Dropship in aerospace fighter mode, enter the atmosphere, land on the planet's surface, conduct an operation, and retreat back into space. They are not particularly fast or well-armed fighters, however, and should avoid aerospace combat whenever possible.

It has been so long since I looked through those rules that I could not remember. The ability to drop onto a planet without a dropship seems to be the only real benefit of the LAM.

Like LAMs wool sweaters for hard working assault 'mechs!
Or scouts, or light raiders, or my personal favorite,

THe only time I played against LAMs, the other guy kept em in airmech mode so he could make insane charging attacks with them.
I didnt notice any other benefits, and a couple of them died faster than I thought they would. Minor hits did alot of damage, damage that an actual mech-mech would have weathered without too much trouble.

Truely had limited roles but in campaign they are great. Raiding, Recon, defending drop zone, clearing drop zone, and finally head hunting. But those are dangerous since they would be on their own. In any stand up fight they are weaker, but they can fight in many enviorments.
AWAD- Got 4 minis, and hardly use them

The real use for LAM's is to make cheap-ass units that can easily get behind enemy units and generate outrageous movement modifiers.
They have no good purpose.

But aren't they considered VTOLs in AirMech mode? And VTOLs can't charge...

And is if used in Hyibrid configuration while in
space?
I read some fluff (TRO 3057 about Hamilcar class DS)and this rule are also contemplated on combat ops.
If mechs could operate in vacuuand why not LAM.(in hyibrid configuration)

Airmech mode does not work in a vacuum because it requires lift, hence it requires an atmosphere.

I've always found LAMs to be rediculously powerful in air-mech mode due to their jumping ability. They can also get back-shots on just about any turn in which they win initiative. If the LAM looses initiative, it can always either get out of range or put so much cover between it and the enemy that you never get a good shot at it. LAMs also don't suffer from attacker movement penalties when firing, meaning it can fly in from eighteen hexes away and hit you on a six or seven. Personally, I've found them to be so powerful I've essentially banned them from most of my games. The only things an LAM is really vulnerable to is conventional aerospace fighters and VTOLs.
