Why is it that I think an Exterminator should be used as a Raider mech deep behind the enemies front lines, yet slot Panthers in for Heavy Mech company spots?
Am I as calloused a 3025 player as the old salts now...? Am I doomed forever to be like the oldsters:-P

You're thinking of what the mech was designed to do, not the weight class it's built in. Speed and weaponry, baby.

Ignoring that part that I cut out (the others have covered it well enough, I think... ), the Exterminator is a raider because of its speed (6/9/6 (5/8/5 in the tech 1 version) is fast for its size), it has a light weapons loadout (again for its size...more suited to harrassing than a standup fight between line units), and it has 2 hands (great for lots of stuff raiders do)...
The Panther, OTOH, is slow for its size, and mounts heavy weapons and armor (for its size)...of course, it can't stand up for long with the big boys, but with big brothers of its own, it should be able to contribute to the fight...
