Simple enough. I know that changing to Endo-Steel is not a refit, that's a new 'Mech. Changing to Ferro fibrous can be a refit to an existing 'Mech. But is it a refit or a new 'Mech when you change the engine?

I'd say if you change the rating or to/from an XL I'd say that's not a refit.

I believe some mechs, like the Banshee 3E to 3S change engine size and are considered another varient, not a new mech, but I'm not sure of your question...

Well, considering the fact that you can replace a destroyed engine... It's a refit.

I would say refit.. but a very very difficult and time consuming one.

Lots of engineering work needs to be done, calculations made, etc etc.. lots of potential for things to go wrong..

Not something a Merc unit will undertake lightly

You would need a full repair bay to change out the engine of a mech. As for using a replacement of different size, it all gets down to how familiar you are with it. If it's a new experience you need techs that can do all the calculations and whip up parts from scrap. This is probably best done in a large mech plant, not in the field.

There are some documented engine swaps that you could find blueprints for if you wish. The Steiner Banshee and the Liao/Kurita Charger variants come to mind.

I would say if it is a replacement engine it is a refit if it is a change in engine type and size then that would warrant a new variation number as it would more than likely change the characteristics of the mech

Sorry. I should have specified "engine change" as meaning a different type or rating of engine. Replacing an engine obviously doesn't require the construction of a new chassis, which is more what I meant by "new 'Mech" than a new designation. I'll have to work on making these more specific.

I'd forgotten about the Steiner Banshee, but that's pretty much what I'm doing. Thanks all. Now to write that fluff.

What exactly qualifies a new mech?

When I've dealt with this, I've always winged it, just assuming that as long as the original design was identifiable it was just a new part of the series.

Changing the armor and structure over to better materials would be a standard upgrade, I thought. You'd have to substantially change the armor and engine at least, maybe redo the weapons before I'd call it something else.

An opinion
refit.
changing weapons from 3025 to 2050 version. say ML to ER ML. AC/10 to LB-10X..
replacing weapons with different ones with similar weight/critical. AC/20 with a Gauss Rifle.
Double heat sinks.

New series, same model
same mech, change in engine
", change in armour and/or structure.
major weapons change
(armour is arguable... could be juut a refit..)

New mech
engine AND structure AND weapons change.. possibly armour too.

If the Chassis is the same , would that not be a varient of the same mech?
Faster or slower,
More armor or Less,
Same weapons or not,
You aren't changing the mech just some of it's parts.

De ja vu', all over again. We've had this discourse before....

So what have the Kurita scientists done to make the Hatamoto a different mech from the Charger? Smaller engine, better armor in a new shape, a new weapons package. A different mission.
