OK. how many times have you played D&D (or any other RPG) with some music in the background? It does add a unique quality to the game. But the problem as always been that the CD selection is somewhat limted. or always haveing to change the CD. or (alot of times) the music does match whats going on in the game.
Well, I found a solution with an I-Pod. holds hours of play (without changing CDs). and (With an I-Trip) it can be played through any FM radio. you can select the music you want with a simple scroll. can tell it to repeat the playlist or song. And as for selection. well. Wizards of the Coast has come out with a CD called "Midnight Syndicate" with some great BG music to it. and the Dark Age of Camelot has a pretty decent sound track as well. of course the Conan sountracks are good. And let us not forget the "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. all those together is about 8 hours of music.
I've just played G.U.R.P.S. game with it. and the players loved it. can't wait to try on my D&D group.
All I have to now is find the right music for Btech to add to my group. it should rock
I just wanted to share this idea with eveyone.

Ive actually started toying around with the idea. I need a few components, first, but all in time. For now I have a fairly limited selection, but Ive settled on the Resident Evil (movie) soundtrack for dungeon crawls.
Needless to say, my group has decried that idea.........

Limited CD selection? No way! All our gamers own extensive piles of music, suitable for any game.
Having to swap CDs? Is that really any more disruptive than having the GM or a player horse around with things like portable PCs or cell phones? I'd say no. Besides, your grand final battle can't go wrong with the Conan soundtrack in the background.

I've been using music for about 15 or so years now. I choose the music based on the story. Music that conveys as sense of the story and possibilities of direction. I use songs like Heart's Dream of the Blue Archer and These Dreams during flashback or dream sequences... I used Pheonix's How many of them we make die. and Black Sabath's War Pigs During battle...

How about flipping to the Imperial March from Empire Strikes Back just before some big nasty pops out before the troops.

I got this link over in the Battlecorps forums. Some great music here that is specifically composed for Battletech. Pick your theme and go!
Playing music in the background is great, but it takes a bit of trial and error to make it *background* music that matches the mood of what you're doing. Using musical cues is also a great way to introduce encounters: Oafman mentioned the Imperial March for the main bad guy; I usually use it for when the whole bad guy army is forming up etc., but you get the idea. More importantly, if the players get the idea, then you've achieved your goal.

Another good way to help pick music is to listen to your favorite movie. See what the professionals use to set the mood. Sometimes light music during heavy combat and visa versa can make for some creepy moments.
Almost impossible mission where they must be prepared for certain death? Try Johnny Cash and 'Ring of Fire'. That would be good for those dragon hunting missions, or if you have someone who gets stuck in a Firestarter for the Mechwarrior RPG.

I think 'Ring of Fire' would be best for combat drops, myself.
