In response to Delta's question below, I thought it would be unfair to choose a favourite-ever 'mech. Or even a favourite 'mech of any single TRO. Or even of a single weight-class within any given TRO!
So, here I am, looking at my favourite TRO: the original 3025 one. And it strikes me, that even within a set tonnage, it is pretty hard for me to decide on my favourite one.
So what I would like to do, is generate a poll for every tonnage that has at least 5 different designs. I'll start with the 40-tonners (the only one that has 6 designs!). Which ones do you like, and why? Please give reasons, otherwise this will be another boring waste of space....
Oh, I forgot: once again, I'm not taking variants into consideration. A lot of the early gaming (which defines a lot of the TRO:3025-exclusive gaming) was simply a point of making notes off the TRO and not trying to figure out what the variants paragraphs were trying to tell us.

I voted for the Assassin. This 'mech falls into the same category as the Spider, but is actually quite superior. Its armour is heavier by a ton, it has a (token) long range weapon, and its short range weaponry is more flexible. At the same time, assuming one starts jumping away, there isn't really any difference between a movement of 7/11/7 or 8/12/8.
The Cicada was my first 'mech back in Mechwarrior 2: Mercs - when I was not up to torso-twisting yet.... But apart from that bit of nostalgia, we all know how poorly it fares next to a Locust.
The Clint and Hermes II are similar in load-out, the former carrying jj and the latter having more armour. With such quick 'mechs, I'd actually prefer the extra mobility of the Clint. The Clint's artwork is IMO also in the top-5 of this readout, making this 'mech one of the runner-ups for this poll.
The Vulcan is very versatile. But it has no niche and it is, well, butt-ugly.
The Whitworth is quite tough and well up to supporting heavier elements. It is the one 'mech of this tonnage that really falls into a completely different role - one in which can keep up with heavier designs. Another hot contender IMO.
(I'm telling you - I like all designs out of this book!!!) _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

Tough one.
I pretty much concur with jymset's analysis of these Mechs. Of the bunch, the Withworth is the most powerful, firepower wise, and it's armor aint bad for a 40 tonner. It's speed is way too slow though. I tend to use it as I would heavier Medium Mechs, and it performs very well.
However, I just have a lot more fun with the Assassin, and I love modifying the design.
Close call. Nice poll.

Yeah...I'd have to say that the Assassin is where it's at in this category...excellent mobility, the ability to reach out and touch someone with the LRM's (even if it's just a 5 pack) and the ability to take on multiple types of opponents with its close in weapons...

I've done bad things to other peoples' mechs using a lance with a Vulcan. It's fast enough, and carries a good balance of armor vs weapons.
Assassins are high on my list of useless mechs.
They just jump around and plink at people with those small guns, even if the team could use some real help. In effect you're fighting with one mech less. Sure, it'll be the last of your mechs that still moves, but what good is that when the rest of the lance has been destroyed?

Of the lot, I like the Assassin the most. It's just a nice back-stabber.
I've never been too impressed with the Hermes II. The Vulcan I rather like however.

I voted Vulcan. It was the first mech I ever piloted and also it was a mech I took a Dragon down in. Was a fluck shot but it still counts. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Vulcan for me..
Not a strong mech, but it has a nice array of weapons. Very versatile. Its also a rather fast mech, not as fast as an assassin, but not far behind either.

I voted the Vulcan because of the armament it tends to carry, but it might be close between it an an assasin i think it depends on which load out they have but the vulcan gets the edge in my book

I am replying to this one in a shameless bid for it to jump back to the top - so we can see all polls at the same time, and newbies have a chance to vote on these ones, too.
Well, looks like I've picked the best-liked for this poll, the Assassin is leading all the way!
