I walk everyday early in the morning in my way to work through one of the busiest commercial streets in the center of Madrid. That places it high in the list of places likely to be bombed by ETA terrorists, and indeed it has been bombed twice in the past years, both times I missed the blast by 1 hour morning.

This morning ETA put another car bomb... the eerie thing is that it was in a place on the other end of the city wich I never frequent, I went through that roundabout just 20 minutes before the blast on my way to a job interview. No deaths thankfully, despite the terrorism "warning" (insert sarcasm here) was confusing giving the wrong place and wrong timing, as usual, to try to catch the police when they evacuate the area.

And to think that my family left the Basque country to leave this shit behind...

I'm glad that my luck holds, but I feel a bit uneasy about it.

Man, the internet sure has changed things. Time was this latest bombing would have been something happening a long, long way from where I live. Now it nearly happened to someone in my "community".

I'm glad you are okay, and I hope you keep missing these bombs.

I know how you feel, we had a few close calls in Mosul and Balad in Iraq with IEDs and VBIED (Vehilce Born IEDs) going off AFTER we drove past an intersection or similar spot. It was very nerve racking to say the least.

Glad to hear that you are okay and alive. Take Care!

We keep hearing the news of new ETA attacks in Germany, and every time I think of you, my friend. May all the world's fortune be with you and your country.

I'll second that! Glad you're safe, Vampire.

Anyone still want to refer to terrorists as "freedom fighters" or "political insurgents"? Step right up and I'm sure more than a few of us would like to adjust your view of thw world to the "reality" setting.

Qouted from an old comedy tape I have:
"If fire fighters fight fires and crime fighters fight crime, what do freedom fighters fight?"

One day, maybe my Ph. D. dissertation, I want to right a lasting definition of Freedom Fighter.

Of course, everytime I try, I'm reminded why we don't have one. E.g. try cutting out Hamas and see how Iran objects. Try including Hamas and Israel objects.

Best I've come up with is trying to connect "freedom fighters" to legitimate political organizations which could be sanctioned for the excesses of their "fighters."

And then the Brits have conniptions because the IRA and Sign Feign (no, I do not think I spelled that correctly) are covered.

Uhg. The life of an Academic.

Of course you're still alive, er, undead... whatever.

Just keep your eyes and ears open, and duck and cover when necessary.

The difference between freedom fighters and terrorists is their tactics and targets. Terrorists target civilians to create fear and destabilize societies.; freedom fighters limit their targets to military units and assets for a specific purpose. The unfortunate reality is that freedom fighters sometimes resort to terrorism, or they are manipulted into furthering the aims of terrorists. Al-Qaida and some other Islamic terrorist groups, among other terrorist organizations, have been known to call for freedom fighters for X purpose, then turn around and indoctrinate teh recruits into terrorists for Y purpose.

I divide Guerillas up from terrorists pretty easily. The guerillas usually will target the government/ military that they are trying to fight. Terrorists usually will do anything for a "cause".

I have no real problem with guerillas. They are few, poorly armed and organized, but have serious motivation. The only way for them to fight is the hit and run raids on bases and government. Terrorists I do have a bone to pick with. Mainly because they are fighting for this nebulous cause that doesn't have any real goal other than death and destruction. Usually the death is to innocents who are just trying to live their daily lives.

Glad to see you avoided another one Vampire. I guess you could equate your Car bombs to the USA tornados in the midwest. Both kill people in specific locations, and are fact of life items. The major difference being one is man made and mother nature made, there in lies the sticking point.

Glad to see you are still with us maybe you can explain to people that these slimebombs are not good people to try to reason with
I have tried and have had limited success (Ask Mordel to let you in the Saloon and you can see what I mean ) hopefully people will start to wake up now and stop trying to coddle those who commit acts of terror ( I am pushing close to the limit on this forum so if you want to go further in depth on this subject the Saloon is the place)

When it comes to definitive separation between Terrorist and Freedom Fighter the three most common complaints I find are:

1.) The Maquis and Partisans both attacked civilian targets during WWII (factories, collaborators, et cetera). So the target cannot be a distinguishing factor.

2.) The VC worked for and represented the North Vietnamese Army. The People's Revolution in China represented an opposition government. The Partisans and Maquis represented governments in Exile. What do they have in common? Only one of them represented a legitimate government in their area of operations, so "goverment" can't be the answer.

3.) Red Brigades, Hamas, and many other organizations are State Sponsored, but we still call them terrorists. So State Sponsorship isn't a distinguishing characteristic.

I think the main difference is who wins in the end. If they ultimately lose, or have yet to accomplish their goals, they're Terrorists. If they win, they're Freedom Fighters.

I think it comes down to an apparent bias. If they are targeting you and/or your allies, they are terrorists. If they are targeting your enemies and/or someone you have little to no relations to, then they are freedom fighters.
