I would love to start a conversation on the technical and Tactical uses of Quad Battlemechs. _________________ "Slavish adherence to formal ritual is a sign you have nothing better to think about."

I really dislike quads. Sure they have that diagonal movement thing, and are more stable, but they just lack room. Beyond that I have yet to see a FASA/FanPro designed Quad worth a darn. They just lack that certain...je nes sais qua.
Plus you they lose two legs, that's it for them. They can't move, they can't prop themselves up to fight.

Quads do not have to prop. They can fire from the fallen position without proping.
And that extra stablity helps in a city fight. Running on ferreocrete and all.
As you can guess. I like the quads

Cadet, check out the Barghest...damn fine mech.
And it only needs 2 legs to move and fight

Quads greatest advantages are that they can carry a greater armor load and have greater stbility. Most FASA quads are pretty crappy, so saying they show the potential for the quad philosophy is faulty. The scorpion and goliath flat out suck, and only the Barghest comes to mind as a quad worth using.
Still, I find that quads are overall inferior to standard biped designs. The inability of quads to twist torsos is killer, which results in pilots having to be much more careful where they move their beast or they might find that they have nothing in their frontal firing arc when it comes time to fire. The lack of torso twist also forces quads to be much more susceptible to the whims of the initiative roll.
Second, their limited internal space makes it difficult to design a quad with good weapon efficiency. If you as a designer want to mount a large amount of equipment you are usually forced to settle for the heatsinks that can fit into the engine, as there is little room available in the torsos.
Overall I have to say that quads are OK, but not as good as bipeds.

I attack the problem of protecting the rear arc by arming it with a substantial weapon(PPC,Streak SRM,AC,Or Med or Lrg Laser). The use of a lrg laser or ppc on the rear flank has been a rude awakenning to many opponents over the yrs.You are right though the Fasa approved designs sucked. But I have made the better Mouse Trap

The cool thing.... hidden, prone behind a level 1 hill. Easy roll to stand up and let it rip. Also put heat sinks in each leg and wade into the water. Your hot beast can blast away. Quads are cool and fun but not the best design....... and anyone who makes a quad Jump should be shot.
AWAD- Tarantula my ass..... how about the Death Cricket

Quads make great walking tanks...and walking missile platforms...level 3 turret rules can really be used well on these things.
I really haven't had any bad experiences with them so I am really netural on this one.

Quads are full sized and can't hide behind level 1 hills....they get partial cover just like bipeds

Yes, they can go "hull down" if you're using that optional rule. If not then they are just as bipeds for LOS.

I disagree on the the height of quads, but I don't have my books, so I won't be able to look it up till I get home, but i could have SWORN i read somewhere they were considered level 1 for purposes of LOS.
Raven, needing to get to his books!

BZZZZZZ if a biped mech goes prone behind a lvl 1 hill he is hidden. Same goes for quads.... prone for them is crouching not laying down. Same principle, one looks cooler. And you are correct, if I stand behind a lvl hill I get partial cover just like a biped, only my torso gets blasted more.
AWAD- a favorite tactic, prone on top of a building
