Here's one just for the sake of argument:

If you had the choice, which RPG/gaming system would you attempt to translate into Mechwarrior so that you could use it there as well?

I have been working with a weapons compendium (certain existing known personal weapons as of 1983) from Firebird LTD (Are they even still around? maybe Ravenheart can tell me; LTD is British for INC.) and it has gotten me curious. (I think I have it to where it's translated, but I just can't get aorund to proving it in practice.)

Well, that's a simple one for me. I would translate the White Wolf system. I use to play Vampire a lot, and to this date it has been one of the easiest systems and yet very fair.

There was a time MANY years ago where I actually started to make the conversion. I didn't get past page one, but I thought it weird that you asked that question.

Easy one for me. Remove FASA physics/Game mechanics from the game.

Back when I played MW:RPG I substituted the personal battle system for that in the Palladium games. I found a book called Guide to Contemporary Weaponry (or something like that) and I really liked it. So I used weapons from that instead of the old MW weapons.

I used HERO, but the same basic idea--a generic system would be easiest and require a lot less work.

My favourite game system ever, from a Spanish RPG called "Mutants in the Shadow" a present day spy and X-Files like conspiracy game used the best system I've ever known

Attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Willpower, Percption, Intelligence, Charisma and whatever else you want to add)
Range from 2-9

Skills range from 0-10 levels.

All actions are based on D20 roll according to this Action Chart. You succeed on achieving the number listed or higher. You added modifiers to the roll, + or -

Level Easy Normal Hard V.Hard Impossible
0 13+ 16+ 20+ - -
1 10+ 13+ 16+ 20+ -
2 9+ 12+ 15+ 20+ -

..and so on, if anyone is interested, I can scan the chart. You also had Pride Points, equal to your Willpower attribute, per each point expended you could lower the difficulty in one level.

Simple, intuitive and to the point. And foolproof. I am of the opinion that standard skill rolls should be as simple as possible, and the combat system can be as complex as you want it to be.

d20 Modern (d20 rules tweaked to handle guns and stuff) is scheduled for release in October. It is supposed to be similar to Star Wars. If you want asneak peek at it, grab the March/April issue of Dungeon/Polyhedron when it hits the newstands. It'll be worth it.

That takes talent if anyone was interested in the game.

I believe that there are files out there for using GURPS as a Mechwarrior substitute. Check out www.sjgames.com/gurps to find it. I'm not exactly sure where, though with some digging I'm sure I could come up with it at a later date.
Since there are also rules for creating Mecha in GURPS, perhaps it wouldn't be so difficult to create BT mechs for GURPS. I'd be willing to give it a try, as I have the books for Mecha and Vehicles...

Someone above mentioned Palladium... My thoughts on Palladium (and I know at least one person here who shares this) are this: Great settings, horrible system. I quite like the Rifts setting, but I don't like how the system works. Granted, I used to play Palladium games back in high school and college, but I've found other systems that work much better.

Just my two $0.02...

I think that the system was the major complaint that I've heard about Palladium's games. They did have some interesting stuff, tho. Like in the back of some of the manuals for the Robotech RPG, they had info on the original Japanese version of the series.

I hope that Kenzer and Co. (KODT) comes out with a supplement for Hackmaster......MechaHack! (SpaceHack). That would rock.

I'm still trying to save up enough to get the Hackmaster core compendium. Once I start mowing lawns again, I'll have it.

I've pretty much removed BT's Spacial travel rules for the jump points and use Travellers rules for transportation. Far more believable for me. I like the idea of having a ship jump in at 100 planetary dimensions out and allow the DropShips to travel if its a JumpShip or WarShip, then to jump in at the Nadair point and spend 1 to 3 weeks traveling in. To me that goes against the norm for SciFi space travel!
