My question is this: in addition to the external bomb load, do you think a fighter should be allowed to dedicate via misc equipment a tonnage of its weight to an internal bomb load?

ex: Instead of 10 tons of weapons, you allocate 2 internal bomb loads maxing at 10 tons.

I personely feel it should be a Lvl1 design option and as the craft is allocating weight for its use, it should not suffer the normal speed penalties for external loads [ie: -1 mp per 5 tons of bombs.]

My two sense... how about you?

Sure. It's basically the same thing as a One-Shot missile weapon, only you have more than one munition to drop.

Funny you should mention that. I happened to have posted 3 designs in my "V" Type Bombers thread that used small craft airframes and had rather large internal bomb bays.

Of course you should be able to have internal bomb bays. One way around it would be to use an Omnifighter with suitable free pod space and just mount bombs instead of guns.

Sure, just allocate tonnage to ammo and when you're flying over a target, instead of shooting the missles, you're dropping them instead. Any time you allocate cargo storage on a mech, fighter, vehicle, ship, etc... It's internal and covered by the armor. Say I've got a 50 ton vehicle and allocate 10 tons to cargo. I can carry 60 tons with said vehicle. 10 tons in the armored section and the weight of the vehicle in exterior weight. All mechs, vehicles, etc..(iirc) can carry their own weight externally. Of course anything external is unarmored and subject to normal fire rules.

Fighters have limits on external bomb loads, though. No more than 20% of their weight can be carried like that. And they lose 1 point of thrust for every beginning 5 tons of bombs.

For example the common Corsair ASF at 50 tons may carry no more than 10 tons of bombs. The price is reduced speed, 6/9 become 4/6.

Internal bomb bays seem like a good idea to me, but AeroSpace assets are a specialist branch even more than mechs. Perhaps it would be best left for conventional units?

When I first posted up the V-type bombers I figured that a bomb bay is basically a Cargo bay with the door on the bottom . The bomb racks are basically cargo tie-downs that allow the bombs to be released in flight when the doors are open.I figure that they would take up no more weight than the external racks which I assume are included in the bomb weight.
