I came across these two stories while browsing tonight.
This first is a site with 197 very well done pictures. A young Central American Guy named Alvaro took them in New Orleans. He was there, rode it out and all that.
The pics have captions that tell the story of what he went through, what he saw, and how he and his friends finally got out of there.
There are some things in here that seem rather miraculous, as they have to do with religion. One is a church that survived looking untouched. Another is a statue of Jesus Christ, surrounded by 5-6 century old trees. The storm took down all the trees, but not one branch touched that statue. Go there and see the pics for yourself.

This second one is a retired Sgt. in Texas, a guy who is in a club that collects and restores old military vehicles. He had a 5 ton, what they call a deuce and a half truck? And he had a best friend in Biloxi, near the coast. So he got his truck ready, racke up his credit card buying supplies, put his old camos on, strapped on a .45, and drove to Biloxi to help his best friend, his friend's family, and a whole neighborhood by using that truck like bulldozer to clear the roads. He helped a lot of people.
This guy has a real bad back, the result of what he called "explosive trauma" from back during his time in the service, high blood pressure as well, etc. And after his friend was all right he went home to reload and then went to New Orleans, where he used his truck to help a whole lot of people. He also got shot at and returned fire.
It's a truly amazing story and it is posted at the Lone Star Military Vehicle Preservation Association website. A true must-read.

A trully 'unreconstructed' american who saw a problem and used the resources at hand to solve it. The Feds are great for help in the LONG RUN, in the short term YOU ARE ON YUOR OWN. The police are not going to protect you from the tiger when they are busy keeping the entire tiger population down. it is your job to stay alive.
When you hear Grandad talking about lack of personal responsibility. this is exactly what he is refering too. The government tells you to evacuate, they are saying "run, we can't help yet, get yourself some space and time!"
Once you survive the initial stuff (If you were smart enough and fast enough) the Feds show up with food, water and the guns, and ammo to settle the threat.
The Sgt seems to be a small town guy and understands that to food starts out someplace other than the supermarket. He also seems to understand Basics versus Luxuries too. The number of people I see who keep on buying for their game collection, and complain about not being able to afford food I tend to put in the non-responsible category when it comes to survival.
