This is a thought I had not too long ago.
Would it be possible to take a mech or a vehicle fusion reactor and modify it so that it becomes a full-on power plant?
I was wondering what would happen if instead of powering a mech a larger engine size (like a 375 or 400) were used to power a settlement.

Considering the amount of power that a reactor would need to put out in order to move the mech, fire a full load of energy weapons, AND run all the computer, sensor, and other miscellaneous equipment I would say it would easily power a small settlement. By small settlement I mean a town of around 1000 people, and supporting industry, agriculture, and other such small businesses.
My one thought on this though is that the settlement would require more constant and steady power of a lesser amount, whereas the 'mech would be using huge power demands in sharp spikes. Thus the reactor would be designed for rapid changes in demand, not for steady output.

I had the idea while thinking of elements for a campaign setting I was looking at.
There's a major population center surrounded by a series of hills and mountains. To make matters worse for any potential invader, the passes are lined with pop-up turrets and tunnels. Even if they do manage to get past everything, there's still the defense forces to deal with. As a result, the few times this area has been invaded it has always ended in a triumphant victory for the defenders.
Problem is, by virtue of being surrounded it means there's limited room to grow. And so after a while it would become necessary for people to leave the barrier and set up new colonies. Thanks to the barrier, the defense forces don't need to have very many heavy-end mechs; a single 375 or 400 rated engine could easily be sacrificed if it meant allowing an entire colony to thrive.
