Hmmm. I've never heard of it, and as a tanker, it's my job to know about these things!

Are you talking about the T-90? That is not a SK/Russian project...according to Janes that is the only known tank as of Decemeber of last year with the name Black Eagle.
The picture you linked is of the T-90, which is a solely Russian project.

I don't believe its a T-90. The site listed it as something else. The T-90 had its own page. Let me go look and see.... its being built by Omsk Plant and is, in russian, Chiorny Oriol. it is built off of the T-80U chassis, but has a seventh roadwheel on each side.
Its shorter then the T-80 becuase the crew compartment is no longer near the gun because of an autoloader.
Here are pictures of the Turret of a T-90 -

And here is the Black Eagle -

As you can tell there are some serious differences between the Black Eagle and the T-90. I don't know what the latest Jane book says, as I do not have it, but these pictures (one of them from the Armor show in Greece in 1999), are definitly different enough to make me think that the Black Eagle is a different tank. Maybe Canadian Intel will have something that Alexander can share.

Just checked another armor book, TANKS OF THE WORLD copyright 2001, p284-285 states that it is a Russian tank that is built for an armor show in 1997.
Janes says it's an extention of the T-90 line, and with further check they also say that the Black Eagle is an export tank only.
Given the status of the Russian Federation, I don't see them making a lot of these do to cost.

I don't imagine them buying a lot either, but until I saw this picture i thought I was fairly well versed in Russian Armor and its deployment. Sorta gave me a rude surprise. Beautiful tank though, i love the turret. That thing would do well on tank to tank duels. I wonder what South Korea thinks is going to happen in the next few years?

Where are you getting the info on the South Koreans buying these?
They did buy some T-80s from the Russian but I can not find any info on them buying the Black Eagle. Could you post your source on this, I am very interested in reading about this.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say it's a NORTH Korean/Russian joint venture. South Korea is an American weapons purchaser, whereas the North is deep in Russia's military equipment fold.

While SK does buy weapons from the US, they did buy some T-80s from Russia a few years back. Jane's seemed to think they were for training and testing usage only.
And if the North Koreans are buying tanks, how are they paying for it? Report after reports talk about them being on the verge of famine and worse. So how are they going to be able to buy a state of the art or close to it tank? The cost of one would feed a lot of folks in NK....

Hell, I'm sure S Korea has a few Russian tanks kicking around. Even we have a few up in Canada. A bunch are on the tank ranges in Gagetown, New Brunswick, where they make great targets. We even have a T-72 sitting on the Garrison here in Edmonton.
And, as for N. Korea? They concentrate heavily on their military, in the hopes of one day freeing the oppressed South from it's Capitalist overlords!!! They do this even to the detriment of their own people. Communist countries are notorious for doing things like that. State then the people. It was like that in the Balkans, and in Hungary, and it was very noticable in the way the peole act, and how they are as countries now.

Why would S. Korea want to by any Russian tank? They have their own copy of the M1 called the K1 and the K1A1. And no I am not making the name up.

They might want to design their own tanks for the reason we design ours: military independence. Remember what the Prince syas "Never be dependent on another country for the basics of survival: Food, Trade, and War."
Raven, completely understanding the SKs and also thinking that the Black Eagle is VERY cute!
