Colorful character, but is more suited for a Bandit King role than mercenary leader.
If you need ideas, History is full of examples, from Xenophon to the condottieri of the Renaissance. Or if you don't want to go further, the mercenaries that took part in the African post-colonial conflicts are great examples.

Mansfeld from the Thirty Years war is another mercenary commander...one could see a character based on him being commander of a regimental sized merc unit.
The line between a mercenary and a bandit king is pretty thin. After all, Kurita hired troops from Hendrick Grimm. If the nearest great house wants to pay you off, you're a mercenary. If they don't want to pay you, you're a bandit
