So I've been looking for some stuff on military religious behavior in Medieval Europe. E.g, the waiting period between battles so Soldiers could do pennance in Orthodox Europe.
One of the things that keeps popping up, well into the 19th century, is "absolution" in Catholic Europe before battles. So my question is, is this actual last rights in case the soldier dies? Is this something else?
Other fun facts you might know are also welcome. (Working on a book, though not B-Tech, obviously).

Beleive it or not, I did. It tells me that absolution is the release from sin.
Is this the last rights? Is this something else? And is it the same thing when it's done before a battle?
My difficulty is that I speak protestant, not catholic, and we tend to run all these words together, whether they should be or not.

IIRC absolution is part of the last rites, but also available separately. Good to get before going into battle where you might die.

From my (albeit limited) knowledge, Absolution is the cleansing of sins. Meaning, that should you be slain in combat, your sins are forgiven so you will go to your Final Reward.
Last Rites are typically said for the dead. A final blessing and prayer that God will accept the soul into Heaven and such.
