Hi guys - this is close to being an off-topic thread, but my interest in this is firmly rooted in BT affairs, so I ended up posting it here. In the off-chance that one of the old-timers may have had some knowledge of things that happened in the fall of 1987!

Yes, my question is a real-world one:

Does anyone know what happened to/because of Clifford van Meyer in well, probably November 1987?

I recently acquired StarDrive 1/1 - the last volume ever of the famous StarDate magazine. StarDate became the premier BT magazine in the late 80s, as of volume 3 (consisting of 6 issues). A few of their 'mechs are now canon! (Flea, Longbow, off the top of my head)

Their art director worked under the pseudonym of "Gideon". He really made the magazines worth their while.

However, StarDrive 1/1 changed the direction of the magazine (it folded after that issue, anyways). There was an open letter to FASA in the front, distancing the magazine from the "negative image" (ie - the scantily-clad chick* on the cover of Sorenson's Sabres, some images of N. Kerensky, the language of the BT comic).

And there was a note telling the readers that the art director - now called by his real name Clifford van Meyer - had been let go. That the magazine didn't have any knowledge of his actions. Followed by a request that anyone who had encountered him on any cons prior to December should contact the staff in the case of any problems.

So, what happened? That sounded like serious stuff. Especially considering how much of an important part of the magazine he played.

And is it a coincidence that this was to be the last ever issue of such an important magazine?

Now, I know this is a great big stab in the dark - after all I googled for him, and NOTHING! But maybe some of you old-timers know? Or better yet, you know someone who may know?

Getting to know stuff like this is a great part of the hobby for me. I appreciate you taking your time to read this!

I doubt you're going to run into anyone that knows anything about what happened simply because it happened so long ago.

The fact a Google search returns zero results speaks volumes...

Love to help out....if I could.

I have been around that long and more, but I don't remember the event or artist to whom you are referring.

I can remember the issue with the longbow. I can even member the other items you talk about WHEN they were released.

But I don't recall your artist.

Sorry.

Keep trying like Gunslinger said, because I too am now curious and would like to know.l

Thanks,

Later,
