==Overview:==
Although the Maxim was a venerable design and still boasted wide-spread usage,
the simple fact of the matter was that it was largely obsolete for use on the
modern battlefield.
As sales began to taper off, Maxim Transport Industries was forced to try and
come up with a way to keep interest going in their wares. After an all-night
(possibly drunken) brainstorming session, some of the company's engineers came
up with the Xamim (an anagram of "Maxim").
The concept is both simple and revolutionary. The Maxim chassis would be
heavily modified in order to mount a Thumper artillery piece. This flew in the
face of conventional wisdom in regards to hovercraft, but the engineers
realized that the frame could indeed mount an artillery piece so long as they
counter-balanced it properly for travel. However, doing so would come at the
cost of two-thirds of the original infantry bay and all of the original
weapons.
The result, then, is a highly mobile artillery platform that can carry its own
squad of infantry escort. The Xamim can glide into position, fire off a shot
or two, and then be gone before any opposing commander can even attempt a
resposne. Two tons of ammo allow it to stay in the field for a while before
reloading, and the .4 tons of cargo space can be used to store supplies for an
extended sojourn, a commando or two for additional effect, or even 80 more
rounds for the machine guns. A particularly cunning commander could possibly
even use the infantry bay to haul a suit of battle armor and have it be
supported by a two-man commando or sniper team.
