Tim Russert has died at the age of 58.

As I sit here with tears in my eyes, I examine why this hits me so hard. The last time I was as touched by the passing of a public person, it was my favourite actor, Jack Lemmon. Then, it was the mourning of an original mind, of a creative being. Now it is the person who hosted Meet the Press - the American news show that I watched almost without fail during the last 1.5 years.

What was it about Tim Russert that makes a world without him seem so much poorer?

This is much too early for me to actually formulate a coherent, comprehensive answer to that question. But I did tell my girlfriend - who was unaware of him - a moment ago:

This was a wise man. He was the best example for the fact that the US, despite all the commerce and consumerism, are a cradle of wisdom.

Remember that his was a short statement to a German who is disinterested in world politics. As such, I think it sums up my current feelings quite nicely.

After a long absence, I come back to Mordel's, because there was never any other place where I could ever turn to talk about topic that touched on American politics and public life with citizens of the US. For this opportunity, I thank you all in advance.

I'm moving this from the Saloon to off topic because while Russert covered politics, he represented every political group in is journalism.

Russert was an unabashed liberal, and made no secret of it. But he in his job he was both equally hard and respectful of every person he interviewed, never shying away from asking the tough questions no matter who was sitting in the other chair.

How important was he in the political landscape? No matter who you were, if you were running for President you made Meet The Press on for your first stops. And you would be treated fairly.
