I wish Wizards had not made a big fuss about the version that was on game engine were you could dl like dozens of old card games. It had a central server you HAD to connect to but then you dl'd the game images to play.

We need a VASSAL version now.

I pulled out my cards the other day and built myself two decks. What factions did you guys play? I built a Jade Falcon deck and a Davion deck, but I used to play Kurita back in the day. The CCG and Mechwarrior II/ MW II Ghost Bear's Legacy are my only real exposures to the battletech universe by the way.

As long as you don't use any faction specific cards it is a General deck.

I actually only played once. Got my ass kicked. Smile I actually had started work once on a program that would allow you to play against someone else online via TCP/IP. Never got too far with it though.

You clearly need to expose yourself moar Wink

I've never started to play the card game, because the support here was never strong. Not even in the times when FASA was still in business, so seing me contributing meaningfully in this section of forums is quite unlikely.

I have tinkered around with a mixture of card game rules and rules modification to try and address the 'issues' i have had with the BT CCG.

When it came out i was in high school and card games at my school were a big thing for those on a class break or during lunch. We would take two to four tables at a time with ppl playing or watching. And i found that when given the option between say BT CCG, the 1st SW CCG, or Magic, most ppl would choose magic. Only those who geeked BT or SW would collect any amount of cards for them or play regularly. And the reason is simple, while all of the other games since magic have tried none can match the simplicity of play with the difficulty of mastery.

BT required a lot of counters and tracking. Dice roles and flipping of cards. It was just bulky compared to Magic despite using the same game system foundation.

In Magic you have 6 resource types, Blue, Green, Red, Black, White, and Other. This meant that you had deck types. In BT CCG, you only had 1 resource point type of other but sub resource types of Munitions, Assembly, Logistics, Political, and Tactical. While you could get around needing a sub resource of a type by spending more resource points it was wise to build them in to the deck for efficient usage. This removed the simplicity of building a deck around 1 or 2 color as most cards used 3 sub resources. It could be done but you either payed a full turns worth of extra resources or you only used cards of the sub resource you were going to use [which was at least Assembly and Munitions.] However, it goes further in that except for Politics all the sub resources types had effects that allowed you to repair, reload faster, resupply cards to you pool, or gain initiative in combat.

It tended to play out nice but could quickly disenchant a non-fan if a multi sub resource deck failed to draw a critical sub resource early in the game. I had many games go sour in 2 turns because I couldn't place any defenses because the lowest mech i pulled was some card with like 3; 5A; 3M; 2P so my opponent just came walking on over an spanked me, my resources, and my production so that I could never place or pay off any thing.

Also, the combat rules could easily confuse people with its combat groups and multiple target types. In Magic, you just said i attack with these creatures in this grouping setup. In BT CCG, you could attack the resource pool, the enemies units, the enemies resources, and pretty much whatever cards had to be payed for to be put into play. I personally loved this aspect as it allowed you to change your strategy without changing your cards and gave you more to do then just throw units at each other until one person dies. However, it could get complicated to remember how, what, and when to do things.

However, I think the two most difficult things in the BT CCG are Damage and Production do to the need for counters. While i kinda liked these aspects it tended to slow down the game a lot. The math now was actually math and not just a compare and contrast. Magic if i have a 2/3 and you have a 4/3 then my guy dies while yours lives. BT CCG, however, added armor AND structure so that if i used a 2[1/2] and you a 4[1/2] my unit still dies but now yours has taken damage that needs to be tracked. That damage may have effects that need to be remembered, effects such as assembly that can repair damage, or subsequent attacks. So that if you have a big monster that has like 8[2/10] and i can attack you multiple times with swarms of 4[1/2] units then i can destroy your monster. While i like the ability to do so, it started getting bothersome to track when both sides were deploying 8 units and you needed to count your counters every turn. Yes, some used dice but that added the new requirement of bringing a box of dice versus say 1d20 or 2d10 to track health.

Production was no better as now things needed to be tracked over multiple turns. It allowed you extra tactics in game play such as the infamous urbanmech of doom that u place out 1st turn and kept bluffing as to what it was by adding resources every turn. Opponents started to assume you were building a carpet bombing and scrambled to destroy it. As long as it was kept defended and unrevealed you had a bluff card. But this meant that only lights and a handful of mediums could be quickly produced reliably. Most unit, especially Clan units, required like 3 or 4 turns of production. The effects this had was more tracking and counting plus the inability to respond quickly to opponents surprise moves as you needed to think so many turns a head or swarm cheep units.

All of these aspects combined to make the game slower to play, hard to quickly learn, and difficult to booster draft or starter deck quick play. I had many successful decks planned and played out of just the premier and 1st edition cards i bought or traded for from kids at school. They each required hours of planning and balancing as well as careful unit selection. I found that in the initial release quantity often beat quality with my IS Medium Company swarm and my IS and Clan Light mech swarms. Fast units while fragile were hard to stop and swarms prevented heavy garrisoning as for every unit you garrisoned it was one more unit i could successfully use to attack something else. So you started to loose by attrition. If both sides used /Medium/Heavy mech bruisers, it became a game of who has the larger numbers. I often had games stalemate and deck out because each side had equal number of equal sized and speed mechs. No one was willing to toss away units that took 3 turns to produce on risky attacks. And you often could forget group attacks. Most of the time unless you were head hunting or performing a strategic raid it put your units at more risk then if sent separately. Sure a 12 mech attack sounds great at first, but if the enemy can stop that group with 2 okay units that will be destroyed while nailing your largest uber unit you lost that battle.

I have both loved and hated this game. And god forbid your opponent gets out 3 Arrow IV batteries with enough units to protect them. lol.

Side note, how many ppl got owned by the Firemoth D decked out this 4 MASC, 4 Ferro-Fiberous, 4 Extra Armor Plating, 3 Retrofitted Laser Systems, and 1 Elite Mechwarrior?

Or a Man'o'War C decked out with Maneuvering Ace, Navigation Computer, 4 Ferro-Fiberous, 4 MASC, and 4 Retrofitted Laser Systems?

It's funny, but many of your criticisms about the game are the same things i like. The slower pace it has to most card games gives it a lot more tactics and I really like the idea of sending attackers on specific missions against targets.

The later expansions really broke up the semi homogeneity of limited/unlimited and i think the game was putting out really strong sets up to and including its last one. The only really unfortunate thing is that Comstar, Rasalhaugue, and St. Ives were all factions, but had so little support it would be hard to actually play them.

I got my friend to play a game with me this weekend and it was really fun. We are pretty sure to play again. He played the Jade Falcon Deck and I played the Davion one. He won, but I was making several choices solely based on showing off certain tactics or options or whatnot. I had to try the new Dragonball card game (which i don't recommend) as a trade for getting him to play battletech, though.

The Jade Falcon Deck was based on heavily offensive units with no real interest in their own safety. All of its missions are based on getting past defense or adding damage against targets. The Davion deck is more of a theme one. I used all of the mechs with hatchet that i have, along with missions like vicious kick, brutal punch, and topple for a "physical contact" deck. Both were fun, but the Davion deck is not good enough to compete. I have enough card for maybe 3 decks if i stretched everything thin, but really only 2 solid ones.

I am looking forward to getting back into this game.
