This is the situation:
The party is operating in front of their unit... by a good distance. Plus, they've just gotten through evacuating a whole horde of civilians.
Between the distance that the party is at and the rescue of all those civilians, there's been a supply line snafu. As such, each member of the party is handed an identical ration bag and told that it needs to last each of them for three meals. Contents:
*bean and cheese burrito
*"Mexican" rice (rice and assorted vegetables in spices)
*cake slice
*strawberry spread packet
*packet of lemon-flavor beverage mix
*two vegetable bullion cubes
*two sticks of gum.
With a little thinking, the party can easily sub-divide the contents into three full meals -
[1] Spread the strawberry stuff on the cake, thus making a pastry. Good for breakfast on-the-go or a light lunch.
[2] Put the "Mexican" rice and one of the bullion cubes in a pot of boiling water. In short order, the character will have a thin but warming soup.
[3] The burrito can be hated up and eaten by itself.
If they can't figure this out, however, they'll have some empty stomachs should they eat it all too early.
I figure that by forcing them to be creative with their rations it'll get them thinking creatively without anything more serious happening to their characters than some possible hunger pangs.

That's good. But have you sorted out what other methods you will consider a success? My initial thought was to eat cake, burrito, and rice, in that order, with the bullion cubes, drink mix, and jam saved for an unsatisfying, but calorific enough final meal. (Making 4 'meals' total.)
...but I suppose I was focused on a survival point of view, eating the contents in the order they are likely to go bad. Might be able to pick up food from other sources, after all, and with supplies being haphazard, stockpiling things that keep isn't a bad idea, especially if they are light.
I guess the question is, are you open to the idea of right answers other than the suggestion you provide? So long as you are, it probably will be fun. Your party may surprise you. _________________ Jarylan Blackwell

Main idea is for the characters to put it all together and realize that if they subdivide their ration it can indeed last them an entire day.
It's basically a matter of sideways thinking. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)

Each person gets 1 full bag, each bag containing all of the listed items.
In other words, each one is getting a fancy MRE. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)

They've got plenty of water.
It's the food that will be the issue. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)

Tries hard to think why it would be a problem if the party ate only twice a day? Late breakfast, early dinner and eating some bread crumbs all day...
bean and cheese burrito - lunch
"Mexican" rice (rice and assorted vegetables in spices) - dinner
cake slice - breakfast
strawberry spread packet - something to nibble on during the day
packet of lemon-flavor beverage mix - drink? How much do you have?
two vegetable bullion cubes - Perhaps consume during the day to keep yourself warm or add to lunch or dinner
two sticks of gum - to keep your jaws busy? _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

You could stretch the food to 2 days.. They might be hungry but not starving.
Spread Jam on cake, cut in half. 2 Breakfasts.
Cut Burrito in half . 2 lunches.
Split Rice in half. 2 Dinners.
Bullion Cubes. 2 snacks.
Lemon Drink. 1 treat.
Gum . 2 treats
Water fills in wear needed. _________________ Sir Henry
