Well, I just got some really bad news this morning, folks.
Back in 2008, a local realtor named Jack Smith bought the strip in which the newspaper I work for - Copperas Cove Leader-Press - is located. Smith promptly made his presence felt by jacking up the rent by 143% (from $411 a month to $1,000 a month). The owner of the paper was looking to find a new place, but never did.
Fast forward to the 30th of October. Smith, while at a football game, got busted for drunk and disorderly. As Smith is fairly prominent in the community (he's the head of the Fort Hood Realtors' Association), when the owner of the paper eventually found out he published news of the arrest. Given that the paper is one of the few that still actually does investigative journalism and doesn't mind probing the odd scandal or two, there was nothing unusual about this.
Well, in what appears to be an act of retaliation, Smith gave notice on Wednesday that he intends to evict the paper; everyone and everything is to be out by the 31st. If the owner can't seal the deal on another storefront, then a 110+ year tradition will come crashing to a halt thanks to some guy's ego.
I've just fired off an e-mail to some of my business professors to see what they have to say about it, but right now all I can do is wait.

There's been a new development.
On Monday, the local ABC affiliate and the local daily newspaper both did stories about the eviction.
According to both papers, Smith's stance is basically "It's not an eviction; they signed a one-year lease, and now that the lease is up I'm not going to let them renew it."
His justification? The guy who owns the paper initially considered relocating last year owing to the rent spike, and let the community know he was toying with the idea. As such, he took it to mean that the paper was wanting to leave the location anyway... never mind the fact that the boss clearly changed his mind and reflected that by signing the lease in question.
Thing is, even Smith's lawyer admits that the lease doesn't have anything in it that would actually justify Smith refusing to let the paper renew it.
Additionally, the paper has plans to keep running even if it does get kicked out. They've apparently selected a new storefront to move into, and so it's just a matter of closing the deal and relocating. Even if it falls through, however, the owner has stated that they'll keep going even if it means operating out of someone's home for the time being. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Good to hear that you still are employed. Sorry to hear about the move, but at least your not looking for work. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". I'd say fight the guy in court, but it isn't worth it. Move, and then find every piece of dirt you can and publish it. Make his life a living hell. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

We're moving to a nice business office complex that's on the main highway, meaning that we can probably get some free advertising just by having a big enough sign up. It's in between the highway and a main city road, and is also convenient to the football stadium, two convenience stores, and a pizza joint; not only will it be easier to locate the office and get in / out of the property, it'll also be easier for the reporters to cover the games and get munchies (I've seen the inside of the office refrigerator; it's straight out of Lovecraft).
Either way, Smith is losing out on $1,000 a month in rent now and the only person in that entire storefront is going to be his lawyer; everyone else either moved or went bust. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." I've been out of employment for a little over half a decade. I've pretty much given up. Where I live they either want a BA degree and/or experience, both which I don't have. I hope you'll still be employed.
