Base chassis: 9B Victor

Alterations:

*Replace the 15 standard head sinks with 13 doubles; one heat sink will go in the left arm.

*Replace the AC/20 with a RAC/5.

*Add CASE to each side torso.

*Mount an LRM 5 in the left torso with a full ton of ammo.

*Mount a medium laser in the right torso.

*Mount a machine gun in the left arm, with a half ton of ammo in the left torso.

Although the Victor was meant as a support mech, its load-out makes it little more than a heavy urban combat machine; none of its weapons can hit targets beyond 270 meters, meaning that even with jump jets it's still just a big target in open-air battles. Adding insult to injury is the fact that two of its four weapons require ammunition; once the ammo is expended, it's reduced to merely having the firepower of a light mech.

Going to the RAC solves a number of problems. Not only is it a lot lighter, it runs a lot cooler and takes up less internal space; while individual shots might not do as much damage, selective use of the multi-shot feature can remedy the matter in short order.

Installing an LRM 5 launcher gives the mech the token ability to engage targets at range, meaning that opposing units can no longer snipe with impunity. Note that the machine still retains the SRM 4; the pair are simply bundled together.

Adding a third medium laser gives the machine another weapon that can be relied upon in case the ammunition for all of the weapons goes dry. Furthermore, by locating the weapon in the torso, the pilot won't be left without options in case the left arm is knocked off; he'll still have that torso laser to help see it back to the rear lines.

The inclusion of the machine gun is a nod to the original 9A prototype, which had an array of anti-infantry weapons. Not only does this increase the overall firepower of the machine, it gives the machine token defense against infantry and battle armor.

why not use a flamer rather than the MG?

I don't have Heavy Metal operational right now, and so I'm having to compute everything - including heat - in my heat.

This somehow feels like lacking in the punch department. Sure it has actually greater firepower than the original, but the feeling is there. I don't know, but I prefer my big mechs equipped with something for punching through moderate armour with single hit. Not bad otherwise.
