When the call for games came for Tracon V, a local animation-fan and roleplaying convention, I set out to run games of battletech. Intro games on the first day and second, and a scenario on the end of the second day.
Despite a lot of interested players slugging it out in intro games, we only got four players for the scenario. 3025, lance per player, two sides, three sheets; the setting being a Level 4 hilltop which was to be captured and held for visual reconnaissance during a heavy solar storm. King of the hill, yep.
Except nobody went for the hill to score the turns which would decide the game. Instead, it whittled into a circling slugging fest, and the hill was mostly taken as a shooting position, paying no heed to the VP hexes.
Fun was had by the players, though, so I didn't really push the point, and eventually the game was settled after one side lost their big guns and forfeit their attack - we closed down the game just in time for final ceremonies.
Lots of crippled but few downed units, and the forced retreat rule makes a lot of sense back in the 3rd succession war. Not that mechs got that much more expendable afterwards.
There's also a few pictures I snagged with one of the players' mobile cam, having lost mine (in my own backpack) - Link to the gallery
