Random idea that popped into my head.
As the name implies, these would be LAMs that turn into VTOLs instead of aerospace fighters.
The basics of LAMs apply (10% weight for conversion gear, minimum speed 5/8/5, et cetra), but with the following modifications:
*Maximum weight of 30 tons
*Damage locations: Front = Center Torso, Right Side = Right Arm & Torso, Left Side = Left Arm & Torso, Rear = Legs (divide damage evenly if possible). Weapons in the legs fire to the rear of the vehicle in helicopter mode, weapons in the head and center torso fire to the front in helicopter mode, and weapons in the side torsos or arms can be declared to the front or to the side.
*The rotor occupies one critical space within the center torso, and counts against the rear armor and the structure. Thus, the rotor will be destroyed before the rest of the rear armor or structure is touched.
*While in VTOL mode, the mech gains all the benefits of being a VTOL, including sideways movement, the modifier to target it, and the ability to hover in the air.

Don't the LAMs also have a VTOL mode in which they can hover about? Unless this mode has some kind of advantage in weight and space it's not a viable option IMO.

Nope; Gerwalk mode is a hybrid between "fighter" and "mech" modes that enables enhanced jump movement.
What I'm talking about is the mech being able to hang in the air and blast targets.
Different kind of munch.

I never did like LAMs. They just didn't match with the rest of the BT-Universe in my eyes. Maybe because i played Robotech back then.
But the VTOL-version ... it's strange but i kinda like it

Hah, I know that I saw it somewhere and now I know where my misconceprion comes from. Aerospace fighters are automatically equipped with VSTOL, not VTOL capability, which makes them just capable to lift off quickly

Kraken, I like this idea. I would say that since a VTOL has 2 rotors, each would consume a critical slot in the 'Mech's CT(r); or if the rules for coaxial rotors for one critical slot; or if using dual rotors then one rotor would occupy a critical slot on the left torso(r) and one rotor would occupy a critical slot on the right torso(r). I do think that each rotor would get 1 point of armor like normal VTOLs, though.
By the way, have VTOLs disproved Newton's law of motion? It says "for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction". A VTOL's rotors cancel each other's torques thus there's no opposite and equal reactions when a VTOL hovers/moves.

Ehm ... no.
Each rotor has its individual action and opposite and equal reaction. So theres no problem. This "opposite and equal reactions" just happen to cancel each other out due to the rigid connection of both transmission units through the chassis of the VTOL.

| Yeah, that's what I meant that the two rotors' opposite and equal reactions would cancel each other out while the rotors actions provide movement.
