Description: |
For over 250 years, war, petty hatreds, and slowly falling technology have halted all attempts to unify the Inner Sphere. Five Successor States, splintered remnants of the great Star League, now struggle for control.
But all that will soon change when Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner marry. As they cement an alliance between their tow powerful Houses, the balance of power among the Warlords of the Inner Sphere irrevocably changes. A new golden age of peace and prosperity may soon replace the hundreds of years of interstellar war.
A golden age is not part of Maximilian Liao`s plan, he has joined with Duke Michael Hasek-Davion and Justin Xiang, a former Davion officer, to set in motion a sinister plot to rip the Federated Suns asunder.
And in Kurita space, Yorinaga Kurita has suddenly reappeared to claim his place as one of the finest warriors of all time. Though many had thought him dead, Yorinaga is very much alive as he prepares his unit for their final confrontation with the Kell Hounds. |

My favorite book of the trilogy but the idea of mechwarriors who can't be targeted or detected on sensors is just too weird. It might have been acceptable if there was ever an detailed explanation but as it is I was left wondering if Stackpole had gone temporarily insane. The rest of the book was great. |

I realy liked this book. It was very interesting to see the Inner Sphere before it was corrupted by the evils of the Clans and Victor Steiner-Davion. I really wish that I could find the one that comes before this, and the one that comes after.
The wedding of Hanse and Melissa is probably one of the best BattleTech novel moments, period. "Wife, in honor of our marriage, I give you the Capellan Confederation!" Just a great moment. The characterizations are very good; the characters actually seem quite human, something not every BattleTech novel has done. The 'Mech combat is interesting enough I suppose, but the characters were the real focus for me. I especially liked Hanse Davion. I like the way he wants what's best for his realm, and the way he's not afraid to do less than savory things to get it. So much more a leader than little Victor.
The only bad part about the book is Stackpole's corporeal mysticism. Something which Morgan Kell understands makes him impossible to shoot? And Yorinaga Kurita and Jamie Wolf too? Yeah, right. the book could easily be just as good without that. |
