Overview:
    The DCMS was somewhat disappointed at the performance at some of its Hatamoto variants. It
    commissioned a panel to look into improving the design with 3 basic criteria: low cost,
    battlefield surviability and ease of operation and maintence.
    
    The panel did something better. A member was a vetaran of the Ryuken-ichi and had seen
    combat against the Dragoon's Shoguns. Why not adapt the Shogun design into the Hatamoto
    chasis. True, it meant putting on 5 tons of weight but it only meant strengthening the
    chasis. With the Coordinator's blessings, the team went on to design a 'Mech that had its
    roots in both the Shogun and venerable Battlemaster.
    
    This new 'Mech was to be christened  Quill for it had to be jump capable like the Shogun.
    The Shogun was deemed to be too slow and speed was upped to 60kph. Jump jets were also
    fitted as in the Shogun but this new kid on the block out reach out to 120m. The engine was
    a standard fusion to reduce costs and improve survivability. Endo steel was used to
    strengthen the chasis and increase the amount of tonnage for weapons. 13 double heatsinks
    ensured that the 'Mech remained cool even after firing a full short or long range salvo from
    its weapons.
    
    

Capabilities:
    The designers tried to give an all-energy loadout in the event of a prolonged campaign,
    after learning from Wolcott. 2 ER larger lasers ensured long range striking power and lower
    heat output compared to ER PPCs. 8 medium lasers ensured that an opponent was shredded once
    the range closed to 270m. They however could not resist the temptation of slapping a 6-rack
    of missles. The hitting power of these heavy rockets were too good to pass up. A C3 slave
    completes the loadout.

Deployment:
    Quill has completed its field trials and production is in progress. The first 'Mechs went to
    the Otomo and Genyoshas. But some string-pulling from the Ryuken veteran of the design team
    ensured that the Ryuken will be getting its fair share of the Quill in the next production
    run.
    
    The design has seen limited action against the Clans. The gunji-no kanrei wants to unleash
    the Quill's full potential in a major action against the Cats and Jags. Quill will take
    flight like its namesake and rip its opponents apart like the samurai of ancient Terra.
