Overview:
The HNY-2E Hyena is a little known quad design produced in the last days of the war against
the usurper. At first the specifications called for a sophisticated missile support machine
that would use low profile provided by unorthodox chassis and indirectly fired missiles to
strike from relative safety, but the war changed many things. Including the tasks assigned
to the 'Mech.
Original machine was based on Scorpion chassis, but with increasing number of field reports
criticizing various faults the design team decided to rebuild the 'Mech completely. The new
chassis was heavily influenced by canine anatomy thanks to prof. Mercedes Morse. Morse used
to teach agricultural technology on University of Sian, where she gained wide experience
with agro-mechs, but she was better known as an owner of several dog breeding stations. She
used her knowledge to rebuild the chassis to absorb shocks better allowing smoother ride and
more stability while moving.
That's when the war came to play. The manufacturing centre was never hit, but Kerensky's
units preferred proven designs for line fighting. The SLDF high command had no use for an
experimental design and instead ordered a redesign of the machine to close range specialist.
Star League army was moving toward Terra too fast and bypassed many Amaris units. These
units while unable to threaten the advance of Kerensky still had to be eliminated. HNY-2E
was chosen to work in sector clearing sweeps against units cut-off from their logistics
support.
Capabilities:
To deal with it's new assignment the Hyena was heavily armoured and equipped with weapons
that can easily damage any units that already suffered some damage. Four medium lasers can
vaporize a significant amount of armur on their own, but their effect is much greater in
cojunction with SRMs. A small LRM launcher is all that remained from the original missile
load. It used to be mounted in a turret which allowed the pilot to defend himself while
keeping his main arsenal pointed toward his chosen target. Jump jets were installed after
necessary chassis reinforcements, but the speed had to be decreased in order to compensate
for all the changes the chassis underwent from Scorpion.
Fortunately the Successon Wars were kinder to the design then they were to many others. The
Ferro-fibrous Armour had to be replaced with more common materials and the missile turret
was rendered irrepairable as well, but that had only small impact on design's performance.
The SRM launcher was expanded thanks to the space left after the turret operation mechanisms
were removed, but the ammo bins were no longer able to hold the same amount of SRMs due to
necessary ammo feeder modifications. The Hyena is still a dangerous opponent for weakly
armoured targets and thanks to it's mobility it can be deadly if used to flank enemy 'Mechs.
Deployment:
There are between 10 or 20 operational HNY-2Es in Liao space. Exact numbers are impossible
to tell, because the 'Mechs are rarely fielded because of constant shortage of spare parts
since the end of the second succession war. There were only 25 machines produced, but due to
the lack of any verifiable combat records it's har to say how many of them remained
operational. All 2Es were banded to single unit, maintained and operated by the remmants of
the original staff of the manufacturing center and their descendants. The unit forms a
close-knit community which doesn't seem to be particulary loyal to any house. Name, status
and location are often changed. What's a scout lance of house Kamata patrolling a periphety
planet can be found on the other end of the Liao empire acting as a mercenary battalion
looking for work. The unit is as likely to appear in combat zone as it can be found anywhere
else, because the value of the people isn't in their ability to inflict damage. All men and
women are well trained technicians who pass the knowledge along family lines and rarely if
ever take apprentices. Their speciality is quad 'Mech repair and they are said to be able to
make new gyros and other sophisticated equipment. However, their main occupation is repair
of agricultural and smaller industrial machines. It's the scarcity of skilled technicians
that kept the community well paid and it also kept all attempts to infiltrate or reorganize
the unit at bay.
Notable MechWarriors:
Dana
Dana is the public leader of the community, internal structure isn't known to the outsiders,
but it's him who speaks for all and deals with local authorities. He's also one of the
oldest Mechwarriors known. In his nineties his body is kept together by duct tape and dark
magic as he likes to say, but his mind is as keen as it always was. Dana is known to abuse
his age to get what he wants. Playing deaf when the deal is not to his liking and often even
scolding anyone younger than him. How he was able to survive his legendary meeting with
chancellor Romano is unknown, as it's unknown how he met her... or whether they met at all.

Good fluff, that is why the score is as high as it is. It is refreshing to have a history on why this machine is designed as is and why one is very unlikely to face in combat. The Notable Personalities section is especially well done.
The Mech itself is a solid design, something that is even more rare, a pleasant change.

Good agility and speed, combined with heavy close hitting power make this machine a superb brawler. Armor protection is superb too. The LRM-5 is a bit like icing on a cake, nice, but not the reason you get it. Token long range harassment is good though. Pick away at the helpless long enough and you can break their morale, if you're patient.
Overall, the design suffers only from the problem that many quads have: vulnerability to rear attacks. Devoting significant weaponry to the aft quarters is difficult however, thus, in most cases it behooves you just to make sure the quad is never working alone, and is thus resistant to such attacks due to the presence of lance mates.
Overall, good machine. I do like seeing nice quads.

Quite nice Quad. It has no real heavy weapon but has some combined punch close up. The LRM is more of a gimmick than a weapon but i like plinking away with such a thing! Like every Quad it has problems with its narrow field of fire but the JJ's give it more options to avoid having an enemy in its blind spots. The heavy armor is a good idea on such a close-range fighter too.
