Overview:
The TPN-1A Typhoon was developed as a fire-support 'Mech for the Taurian Defense Force. This
medium design debuted in 2880 when the first dozen were delivered to the Taurian Guards
Corps. In the one hundred and forty-five years since, the Typhoon has proven to a reliable
and effective 'Mech.
Capabilities:
Combining a maximum land speed of 83.2 kilometers per hour with ten and half tons of armor
composite, plus a heavy long-range and short-range battery of weapons, the Typhoon is a
favorite 'Mech of the Concordat. Two Aurora Missiliers missile launchers--the 15-missile
Long Range Deathscap and the 6-missile Short Range Hemlock--provide the bulk of the Typhoons
firepower. Sixteen savloes of LRM's and fifteen of SRM's have been included to provide
sustained fire capacity. Two Martin-Gordan Rapier medium lasers provide additional direct
fire weaponry. Finally, a single Hyades Weapon Consortium Reaper machine gun and a half-ton
of ammuntion are fitted for anti-personnel work.
Deployment:
The Typhoon is deployed throughout the Concordat and has also been offered for export sales.
While not especially common among the TDF forces, neither is it a rare unit. MechWarriors
among the TDF value the 'Mech was an excellent fire-support platform that is mobile and
capable of sustaining quite a beating.
Variants:
The -1B model replaces the HWC Reaper machine-gun with a Jamestown Incendiaries Flamelord
flamer. This model is the most common variant. A much disliked version is the -2A, which
removes both missile launchers and repaces them with a pair of Aurora Missiliers Monkshood
LRM-10 launchers and three tons of ammunition (18 salvoes each). While long-range firepower
has been increased by 33%, MechWarriors dislike the reduction in short-range power brought
about the removal of the Hemlock SRM-6 launcher.
Notable MechWarriors:
The most famous battlefield use of the Typhoon occured on Taurus, on 14 September, 2992.
Cynthia Calderon, the sister of the Protector, was travelling to the family vaction home
outside of Samantha with her husband and family when her convoy came under attack by
terrorists. Three of the four escorting 'Mechs of the 1st Battalion, Taurian Guards were
disabled in the first salvo. The fourth, Cornet Saul Valmet, piloting a TPN-1A Typhoon
somehow evaded the initial salvo of weapons fire. Disregarding his own safety, Cornet Valmet
lifted the ten-ton vehicle containing the Protector's family, and used his 'Mech to shield
them from enemy fire. Using his right arm to hold the vehicle against his chest, he sprayed
the terrorists with bursts of fire from his machine-gun while fleeing at maximum speed. Upon
reaching a safe distance, he set down the vehicle, and returned to engage the attackers.
Three 'Mechs belonging to a Taurian militia had been stolen, and were being piloted by the
terrorists. Fortunately for Cynthia Calderon, they had not coordinated their attack. Cornet
Valmet placed himself between the terrorists and Cynthia and her family as they fled back to
Samantha--and the reinforcements Cornet Valmet had summoned. Fighting by himself for over
twenty minutes, outnumbered three-to-one, Cornet Valmet smashed two of the enemy 'Mechs to
battered wrecks. Just as reinforcements were arriving to his assistance, the third enemy
'Mech landed a direct hit on his cockpit with an AC-10. Cornet Valmet was killed instantly.
In recognition for his valor in protecting the family of the Protector, Cornet Valmet was
awarded the Taurian Medal of Honor, posthumously.

Comment:
A well designed machine overall, but it will hardly shine in any area. It's a survivor though, which is sometimes all that really counts. If there is a flaw then it could be the lack of concentered firepower, but the assumption that this 'Mech will fight without any support, is probably flawed itself. I wouldn't mind having another MG or two, but otherwise it's a fine machine with a good backstorry.

Comment:
This is an excellent general purpose mech. It has good (but not overwhelming) firepower at all ranges, combined with near-maximum armor and good speed and heat dissipation. Any level 1 force would be happy to have this mech in their arsenal, but it's perfect for a Periphery state that can't afford to invest in overspecialized units.
